Chelsea vs Arsenal: Live Score and Updates

After picking up an inspirational 3-0 victory over Sunderland last weekend, Liverpool is going to travel Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Sunday in a high profile premier league match. Liverpool is seemingly out of title contention with 17 points behind Arsenal at the top, with a match at hand. However, Liverpool has indicated a revival of their performance in the last match against Sunderland, after showing inconsistent performance throughout the season. So, finishing the season at the third or fourth place this season could be a realistic goal for the all reds. With the match against Chelsea, Liverpool starts a busy schedule ahead of them. Liverpool has three important matches within next 10 days including their fifth round FA Cup tie with Barnsley and Champions League match against Inter Milan. So, Liverpool has hardly any time to think about their inconsistent performance this season.

The third placed Chelsea, on the other hand, is six points behind the league leader Arsenal while second placed Manchester United is just four points ahead of Chelsea. So, they are very much in the title race with increasing pressure on Manchester United and Arsenal. However, Avram Grant side was held to a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth last week. So, Chelsea can not afford any more slip off at this stage of premier league. It has been a long since Chelsea has not lost any match at the home soil; so Liverpool needs to be at their great shape to outclass Chelsea in front of the home crowd.

However, Livepool has already been hit by an injury blow as their prime striker Fernando Torres has been ruled out of match with a hamstring injury picked up while playing for midweek friendly against France. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he will not play gamble over his in-form striker as it would be risky to play him at the Stamford Bridge this weekend. There is no doubt, Chelsea defenders are now very happy with the news.

The Times reported:

Torres himself had predicted he would be able to play at Stamford Bridge but Reds boss Rafael Benitez insisted yesterday that his top goalscorer would not be risked.

Benitez said: "This injury is at least one week. You cannot play on after an injury like this, it is a big risk. He will not play at Chelsea."….

"We have three big games in 10 days in three different competitions and we have lost our top goalscorer," he complained. "It is difficult to be calm about it, this was another international friendly in a busy period for clubs at this time of the season."

This is really a bad news for Liverpool ahead of a busy schedule. However, Liverpool has some more reasons to be worried. The all reds will not get Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso as he is now in suspension. Andriy Voronin and Ryan Babel will remain out of the final team contention with injury. So, you can see the situation becomes hard for Rafael Benitez to control.

Chelsea, in contrast, has some good news ahead of the crucial match against Liverpool. They might get their long-term injured midfielder Frank Lampard for the Liverpool clash. So, it is more than a relief for the Chelsea fans as the English midfielder was out of action for a long time and missed a number of important matches for Chelsea. Their African stars Michael Essien and Didier Drogba may not be able to play the match after playing the third place deciding match of African Nation’s Cup for their countries. However, Nigerian star John Obi Mikel will be back in Chelsea as Nigeria failed to reach the semi final of the continental tournament of Africa.

International Herald Tribune reported:

Lampard, who has not played at all in 2008, has recovered from a thigh injury and may be fit enough for a recall for the game. Chelsea also has Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel back from the African Cup of Nations after his team failed to reach the semifinal.

If only Michael Essien and Didier Drogba were back, too.

Essien and Drogba are due to face each other in the third-place playoff between Ghana and Ivory Coast on Saturday, and it's unlikely they will be able to then fly back to England for Chelsea's match.

Chelsea is going to have some good time in the day to come as their injured players and African stars are coming back to home. After their African players left the club to represent their country in the tournament, Chelsea had to cope up with a hard time with a number of players were out of action with injuries. They were out of eight regular players at one stage. However, they have come across all those days and now it seems to be a strong side waiting to throw even tougher challenge for Arsenal and Manchester United.

Liverpool striker Peter Crouch is confident to win over Chelsea on Sunday. The English forward has been full of confidence while talking about the upcoming match. He said that his club ha won over Chelsea in many crucial games in what he saw the hope of Liverpool’s victory at Chelsea this weekend. So, the striker is upbeat for the Chelsea clash.

Breakingnews reported:

Crouch, sent off in his last visit to Chelsea in the Carling Cup fifth round in December, said: “It’s a big game next for us at Chelsea, and we were more interested in taking the points against Sunderland to give us confidence for the next match at Stamford Bridge.

“We will go into that game with more confidence now. We are good enough to beat Chelsea, we have done it before and I am sure we can do it again although it will be a difficult game.
“We have beaten Chelsea in big, big games before, and this is a big one for both of us. They want to challenge Arsenal and Manchester United and we have got to make sure we keep our momentum going, so it is important for both sides.”

I think, it would not be that much easy for Liverpool to present Chelsea a shocking defeat as far as their recent forma is concerned. It is true that Liverpool is a great team and if they are in right shape that nothing is impossible for them. However, the fact is that they have not been in right shape most part of the season.

No doubt, it is a crucial match and fans are eagerly waiting to see both the side in action. I think, both Chelsea and Liverpool have chance to win the match. Chelsea will have home advantage, while Liverpool will have less pressure as they are not in title race. Moreover, both the teams will try their best to win the match as it is more of a prestige to them.
