Manchester United’s surprising signing Brazilian midfielder Rodrigo Possebon has already caught the media attention. Given the fact that he is a young and potential midfielder and was not under focus anytime before in his career, there is no doubt, Possebon has been the most surprising signing of January transfer window in English premier league. He is just 19-year-old and was with Brazilian club Internacional since 2006. What was more surprising is that his transfer from Internacional was completed without creating huge media response.

Manchester United already has some quality midfielders like Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson who are doing their job excellently well. You will hardly find anyone who can even think that Possebon could replace them. However, if Rodrigo Possebon can live up to the expectation and meet the standard of Manchester United then he might take the place of Dong Fangzhuo, Darren Fletcher or Michael Carrick. Manchester United’s long term soldier Paul Scholes is now very close to his retirement. So, it would be very possible to feature Rodrigo Possebon in the squad if he can prove his worth and talent to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Considering that this is a long-term acquisition, I think he’ll stay with us for the rest of the season (as opposed to being sent out on loan) and get integrated into the squad and our culture. Then, depending on how well he does (surely he’ll play pre-season), he could be sent out on loan to a Premier League side or if Possebon is really, really good, he could be elevated to the first team and Manchester United could end up selling Darren Fletcher / Michael Carrick.

I think, Possebon must have something in him. Otherwise, Manchester United would not find any interest in him. In the past, we have seen many surprise and low profile signings for Manchester United, who later paid off double for Manchester United. I think, he has a good future in Manchester United. Now, let us see if Rodrigo Possebon lives up to the expectation of Manchester United.
