The draw of the quarter final round of Champions League 2007-2008 was held today at 13:00 CET in Nyon, Switzerland. The eight quarter finalists have drawn their competitors in this stage. The eight quarter finalists are Arsenal, Liverpool, Roma, Manchester United, Chelsea, Schalke 04, Barcelona and Fenerbahce. Chelsea has drawn Turkish champion Fenerbahce in the quarter final of Champions League. So, the Blues are reportedly said to have drawn easiest opponent in the last 8 of Champions League. No doubt, Chelsea is favorite in the match. However, I do not think that Avram Grant would take Turkish side lightly considering their lack luster performance of late against comparatively week sides. First, Chelsea lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup final and then Chelsea was crashed out of the tournament being defeated to Championship side Barnsley. This is where, Fenerbahce could find their hope of progressing further in the tournament. Fenerbahce defeated Spanish club Sevilla in penalty shoot out to make it to the quarter final. Chelsea, on the other hand, roared past Greek club Olympiacos 3-0 on aggregate.

There are four clubs from English premier league in the quarter final round, for the first time in the history of Champions League. It is now almost certain that at least, an English club would be at the semi final in the tournament. It is though a bit hard to predict, but I think, Chelsea and Barcelona would not face much problem to get into the semi final. However, predicting about other two matches would really be very tough, but it is almost certain that all the teams would put their best to win a place in the semi final of the Champions League.

AC Milan is the top seed in Group D and I feel they deserve to be the top seed. However, I am not expecting an easy time for AC Milan. You can never neglect a club like Benfica.

Benfica is highly experienced in Europe and no team can take them lightly. So, I am expecting a tough competition between Benfica and AC Milan in Group D. What about Celtic? Celtic is really an unpredictable team. It has a formidable squad and can offer some tough times to all the other clubs in this group. Celtic is the current champion of Scottish Premier League. In fact, Celtic lost to AC Milan in First Knockout Round of UEFA Champions League 2006-07 (last season). So, Group D can easily become the group of death for all the clubs.

Arsenal Thrashes Sparta Prague 3-0: UEFA Champions League Qualifier

It is a great win for Arsenal. The match has finished just an hour or two ago. Arsenal has defeated Sparta Prague by 3-0 in the second leg of Third Qualifying Round. The match took place in London and that is why it was a home game for Arsenal. I think that you remember that Arsenal won the first leg at Prague 2 weeks ago by 2-0. So, Arsenal won the qualifying round against Sparta Prague on an aggregate of 5-0. Quite convincing- isn’t it?

The irony of today’s match was that former Sparta Prague player Tomas Rosicky scored the first goal for Arsenal and that goal perhaps took the match from Sparta Prague’s hand totally. Of course, today, Arsenal dominated the whole time and played superbly and thus won the match. This win will help Arsenal players to boost their morale ahead of Champions League draw which is going to take place tomorrow.

UEFA Champions League 2007-2008 Draw: UEFA President Michel Platini to Propose a Reform in Qualifying Format

UEFA Champions League 2007-2008 draw will be held on 29 August 2007. The draw program will be held in Monaco. It has been reported that UEFA President Michel Platini will come up with some new plans regarding the present qualifying format of UEFA Champions League. Michel Platini will submit his proposals before the UEFA members and their will have discussion over it.

According to current format of UEFA Champions League, 16 clubs qualify directly to the group phase and other 16 clubs join in the group phase through the three qualifying rounds. Now, UEFA president wants to make champions league more open to all European clubs. According to Platini’s plan, along with 16 automatic qualifiers there will be 12 teams who will enter thorough playing the three qualifying rounds. The other four teams will come through a different qualifying round. All the cup winners of domestic league will compete in a different qualifying round for the four places. Thus, the minor teams will have good chance to enter in to the group phase of UEFA Champions League 2007-2008.

UEFA Champions League 2007-2008 season is going to be started very soon. Including defending champion AC Milan, there will be 32 participating teams in the competition. UEFA Champions League 2007-2008 draw will take place on 29 August 2007. Ahead of the draw on Thursday, football fans are excited. Fans are eager to know that which Group their favorite team will be playing.

Though the date of the draw has been fixed, the qualifying round has not been finished yet because of an unfortunate death of Spanish footballer Antonio Puerta who was playing for Sevilla. So, the third round qualifying match between Sevilla and AEK Athens has been postponed.

The draw for the Champions League group stages takes place on Thursday at 1700 BST with Celtic and Arsenal hoping to make it six British teams among the 32.
Both Sevilla and AEK Athens will be in the draw despite playing next Monday.
The second-leg tie between the pair was postponed following the death of the Spanish club's 22-year-old defender Antonio Puerta.
