Acer to Increase Distribution Channel in UK

World’s third largest computer maker, Acer, is now looking to strengthen its position in the UK market this year. The Taiwan-based computer giant has so far failed to show any prominence in the UK market, but is now confident to make its presence felt in the country.

With this aim in mind, Acer is now trying to engage more operators and increase its retail channels in the UK. The company has plans to introduce ten smartphones and three tablet PCs this year. Acer is going to launch Iconia Tab W500 which would be the company’s first ever bet on the tablet PC market. Now, UK is understood to be one of the markets the company is looking to exploit.

Acer’s senior corporate VP, Aymar de Lencquesaing, has recently said, “Our goal in 2011 in the UK market is to become clearly referenced in one or more operators and also to be present in the retail channels.”

Acer will also come up with its first Windows 7 Phone-based device in Autumn this year. Though it will continue to release Android-based devices, De Lencquesaing also revealed that the company would increase its Windows Phone 7-based devices in 2012.

Sub $200 Smartphones to become very Popular

While American consumers are eagerly waiting for smartphones with dual core processors and 4G LTE wireless internet facilities, for rest of the world, price is a big deal yet. According to a report of Digitimes, sub $200 smartphones will have half market share of the total smartphone industry by as early as 2013.
In 2010, this proportion was 20% and in 2011, it will go to 30%. It perhaps clearly indicates that many people even in poor countries are ready to make the switch from feature phones to smartphones. The main growth in number will mainly take place in Asian countries like India, China and Indonesia. The US market has also a lot of growth potential for the next 2-3 years.

Kyocera Echo smartphone with dual-screen is coming in April on Sprint

Japan based Kyocera, in collaboration with Sprint, is going to roll out a dual-screen smartphone called Echo. The phone will be exclusively available on Sprint from April 17, 2011 and will cost $200 with a

two-year contract. Interested buyers can place their orders for the phone starting from March 26, 2011. On the launch day, the phone will be available at Sprint stores and online.

Each of the screens measure 3.5 inches. It folds down to a standard sized phone which means it can easily fit into your pocket.

An Android 2.2 based phone, the two screens of Kyocera Echo can act as separate screens running separate operations. When pulled out, the two-screens, latched together, gives impression of a mini-tablet PC.

You can watch YouTube on one screen and browse your email on the other. Check your Facebook status on one screen while text your friend on the other. The operations are seamless. To take advantage of the phone’s dual-screen, Sprint worked with Google and created special apps. For example, you can watch Google Maps and see the expanded video of the map on the other screen.

Asia becoming the Number One market for Smartphones Soon

When you think of the smartphone market then naturally, you think of USA. It is the land of smartphones indeed. In the next few years, almost everyone will have this device. Well, still, the future of this industry is now heading towards Asia from USA.  According to IDC, 137 million units will be shipped to Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) region. According to the same report, by 2015, the number of smartphones in APEJ region will reach to 359 million. If you include Japan then this figure may reach to 400 million.
Needless to say that by 2015, at least by number, Asia will be the important place. Well, I think that in terms of average revenue per user, America will be ahead by quite a distance.
In APEJ region, Nokia is still the dominant force. This is good news for Microsoft as Windows Phone 7 is going to be OS for Nokia phones but that is not going to happen at least 9-10 months. Android will see a remarkable growth because Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG and Sony Ericsson are active in many Asian countries. iPhone is popular in some countries like Australia and South Korea. iPhone is gaining momentum in China too. However, I do not think that iPhone will do that well at least in the next 5 years just because of the price factor.
