David Bentley is confident that boos of supporters will not affect in his game if he is featured in the match against Switzerland. The Blackburn Rovers midfielder faced huge boo from the fans during his debut last year as he had pulled out himself from England U-21 team’s European Championship campaign the previous season. However, he said that nothing would affect his game as he could not do anything about that withdrawal. To him, performance is everything and he is eager to show his worth in the international level.

Setanta Sports reports:

“Look you can get wound up by that stuff and let it kill you, or you can decide you’re not going to take yourself too seriously,” said Bentley.

“I know people want me to be repentant about what happened when I pulled out of the Under 21s but the fact is, it happened, and I can’t do anything about it now. I got booed and again I can’t change that.

"It’s all about performances on the pitch. I want to show I can talk the talk and walk the walk. The challenge for me is to get into the team and stay there. I’ve got to prove myself on the international stage to a degree so I’m not going on England duty, joining up and being with the squad unless I believe in yourself.”

I think, David Bentley is full of potential. What he has done in the past is past. England fans need to support him to flourish his potential as he is a young player. After all, he is representing England in the international stage. Supporters can boost up his confidence level that will eventually help the whole England team.

Steven Gerrard has been appointed as England captain for the friendly match against Switzerland. It was widely predicted that Gerrard would become the role as he has the experience at the club level. The Liverpool striker has been given the job for the Switzerland match. Chelsea captain John Terry led England during the Steve McClaren’s reign in England national team. However, he was not included in the squad for the Switzerland friendly as he is in the way to recover from his foot injury.

Gerrrard has recently spoken highly about the new coach Fabio Capello. To him, Capello is a type of manager he wants to play under. So, you can understand that Steven Gerrard is inspired to play under Fabio Capello.

4thegame reported:

"Fabio has the aura all top managers have. When he walks in the room, he has got an aura about him and those are the type of managers you want to play for," said Gerrard.

"When you look someone in the eye at a team meeting, you get a feel for someone straight away.

"I think about the third, fourth and fifth words which came out of his mouth were 'winning football matches' so he let us know early doors what he wanted from us.

England vs Switzerland match has come under the focus of English media. This is going to be a special match for both Capello and Gerrard. This is the first match for Fabio Capello after he took over the job. Steven Gerrard will wear the captain’s armband of England national team for the first time in the match. Now, let us see if England can win the match in order to make their occasions memorable.

England vs Switzerland Friendly 2008: David James Hopes to Stand in England Goal Post

England vs Switzerland match is now the much talked issue in English media. Ahead of tomorrow’s friendly match, English fans are eager to know who are going to feature in Fabio Capello’s first match in charge of England. Goal keeper David James has expressed his hopes to make it to the starting line up against Switzerland. Portsmouth goal keeper also revealed his distress for being overlooked continuously during the reign of Steve McClaren.

Portsmouth reported:

James said: 'It was a nice confidence-booster to be included in the squad after I was left out of the first squad of the previous manager.
'But it's now down to me to make sure that I am the number one.
'It's always an interesting scenario when a new manager comes in.
'I'm not sure how many England managers I've played under now.
'When Mr McClaren came in and told me I was not part of the plans, I thought there was nothing I could do about it, so rather than worrying, I just got on with what I had to do.'

The Pompey keeper had to cost a lot for a mistake of World Cup qualifier that forced him to lose the number one position of England to Paul Robinson and spent the last world cup on the bench. However, he was overshadowed for a long time even when Paul Robinson lost the job with poor form. So, James is very happy being selected in the squad and now set his target to win the England’s number one position on a regular basis.

Shaun Wright-Phillips missed England’s practice session ahead of the friendly match against Switzerland on Monday. FA claimed that he had been rested as a precaution but there was nothing serious. The Chelsea midfielder is one of the members of Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad, which will meet Switzerland at the Wembley stadium tomorrow.

England has already lost three players out with injury. So, any more injury would come as a big blow ahead of England coach Fabio Capello’s first match in charge of England national team.

Sky Sports reported:

An FA spokesman said: "Shaun Wright-Phillips did not train at Wembley tonight.

"He was rested as a precaution and will be assessed tomorrow, but the problem is not thought to be serious."

It is expected that Wright-Phillips will be able to feature in the match. However, he has to outfight David Bentley for making a place in the right wing of England starting line up. Now, let us see if Shaun Wright-Phillips can win a place in the first eleven of England against Switzerland in the friendly match.

Steven Gerrard has been named captain of England team heading to face Switzerland in a friendly match at the Wembley stadium tomorrow. The Liverpool captain will lead England for the first time in his career. Gerrard played three matches as the deputy of John Terry, who was the captain of England during the Steve McClaren’s reign in England national team. However, John Terry failed to make it to the Fabio Capello’s first squad in charge due to injury.

Sky Sports reported:

"I have just informed my team before coming to see you that tomorrow's captain against Switzerland will be Steven Gerrard," said Capello.

"I have done it because I think he is an important player for England, according to my plans. He will be captain for this match."

I think, Gerrard is the right person for the role as he has experience of leading a team in the club stage. However, Capello appointed him only for this match. Earlier, he expressed his wish to go though an experiment giving the role to several persons in order to find out the appropriate man to lead England in world cup qualifying round. Now, let us see if Steven Gerrard proves his worth as a captain and becomes the right person to lead England in world cup qualifying matches that will begin from September.

England vs Switzerland Friendly 2008: Jermain Defoe to Fill the Place of Injured Gabriel Agbonlahor

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has been called up in England squad for the friendly match against Switzerland. Defoe replaced Aston Villa’s in-from striker Gabriel Agbonlahor in the 23-man squad as Agbonlahor has picked up an injury during his club’s premier league match against Fulham this week.

Defoe has recently moved to Portsmouth from Tottenham Hotspur and played his first match for Portsmouth on the same day Agbonlahor fell in injury. Agbonlahor has become the third member of England squad to have withdrawal from the match with injury.

UK Press reported:

It is understood that England manager Fabio Capello has stressed to Defoe that the fact he has moved clubs and is now a first-choice striker puts him right into his reckoning for international consideration.

Defoe had not been in Capello's initial 30-man provisional squad announced last week, but he was a Tottenham player at the time and his change of club has pushed him up the pecking order in Capello's mind, though he would also have been aided by the loss of Emile Heskey to injury on Saturday.

Anyway, it does not matter why Capello named him as the replacement of Agbonlahor. Rather, it is necessary to consider that Jermain Defoe has been in good form with scoring for Portsmouth in the first match. Other strikers of England 23-man squad are Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Peter Crouch. Now, let us see if Defoe is given a chance in the starting line up.

Switzerland is gearing up to play some of their good football in the friendly match against England at the Wembley Stadium. Switzerland is one of the co-host of this year’s EURO competition. So, they will look to win the friendly match, which will boost up their confidence level ahead of the EURO 2008. What is more, Switzerland is currently running without half of their regular players who are out of action with injury.

Koebi Kuhn, coach of Switzerland had to face some problem while naming the squad for the friendly match against England. His contract with Switzerland national team will terminate after the EURO 2008 and will be replaced by Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. So, he must try his best to bring some good results for Switzerland before his farewell.

Earth Times reported:

The Swiss have the string of poor results behind them and are plagued by injury - with half of the regular starters sidelined.

Kuhn has been hard pushed to name his strikers, with Marco Streller out of action and captain Alexander Frei struggling to regain his fitness. He has called up Streller's teenage team mate at FC Basel, uncapped 19-year-old Eren Derdiyok.

Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos is in the 23-strong squad selected for Wembley, along with Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes and Red Bull Salzberg's striker Johan Vonlanthen.

I think, Switzerland is balanced side, despite the injury blows. They reached the round of 16 in the last world cup before losing to Ukraine in penalty shoot out. Switzerland did not have to play the qualifying round of EURO 2008. Thus, they may lack of competitive football. They played 10 friendly matches last year with winning five matches. So, they need to take the friendly matches seriously as part of their EURO 2008 preparation. Now, let us see if Koebi Kuhn can lead his side to bring out an impressive result in the friendly match against England.

England and Switzerland are going to face each other in a friendly match at the Wembley stadium on next Wednesday. The match is now the center of all attention among the football fans. This is going to be the fist match of England under their new coach Fabio Capello. So, England must try their best to start the Capello reign with an inspirational victory over Switzerland. The seemingly insignificant friendly match is very important for both sides, but for different reasons.

The Significance of the England vs Switzerland Match

For England, this is the first international match since their heart-breaking defeat to Croatia at the Wembley stadium last year in the last match of the EURO 2008 qualifying round. With that defeat England lost their last chance to win a place in the final competition of EURO 2008. So, it is almost clear that England has to get over their patchy form at this level in order to keep their place as a football power house. What is more, England must try to get back in the right track and get their form back before their world cup qualifying campaign begins from September this year.

Switzerland, on the other hand, is not under that much pressure and does not have loads of goals ahead of the match. Actually, Switzerland is one of the co-host of EURO 2008 along with Austria. So, Switzerland got automatic entry in the competition, set to start from 7 June 2008. Switzerland did not have to play qualifying round matches and thus, they are considering the friendly match against England as a rehearsal of EURO 2008. So, it is apparent that how much importance the match has to Switzerland. So, a victory at Wembley would be more than what they could even dream of ahead of the match.

Timing and Schedule of England vs Switzerland Friendly Match 2008

There are many who are now eager to know the timing of the match. For those passionate fans, here I am giving the timing of the match:

Date: 6 February 2008, Wednesday

Venue: Wembley Stadium, London, England

Kick off time: 8pm (20:00 GMT)

Stadium Open for Entrance: 6pm (18:00 GMT)

Well, if you are interested to attend at the Wembley stadium and want to know information about tickets and travel to the stadium then click here.

England vs Switzerland Head to Head

England has better record against Switzerland. England won 12 out of their 19 previous meetings. The last time the two sides met was in EURO 2004 in Portugal with England winning 3-0 very easily in which Wayne Rooney scored twice and Steven Gerrard once. However, their last meeting on England soil way back to EURO 1996 opening match was ended up with a 1-1 draw. So, England must try to clinch a victory over Switzerland at their home soil. Switzerland, in the same way, will seek to revenge of they defeat to England four years back in EURO 2004 competition. So, both teams will be looking to win the match this time around.

England vs Switzerland Friendly 2008: England Squad

Fabio Capello named a 30-man provisional squad for the friendly match against Switzerland on Thursday, in which he came up with some surprises including some notable absentees like David Beckham. He named two new faces in the squad: Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies and Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor. Capello cut short the squad to 23 on Saturday with seven players being overlooked within 48 hours.

England’s 23-man squad includes three goal keepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders and four strikers. Though there was not any big surprise except the exclusion of high profile Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick. However, overall Fabio Capello was fully criticized for not including former captain David Beckham in the squad.

The Omission of David Beckham Widely Criticized

Daivd Beckham was eagerly waiting for his call up for the friendly match that would have been his 100th cap for England national team. However, the former skipper has been opted out of the provincial squad on the match fitness ground. He was out of competitive football since November last year as it was the off season of his club L.A. Galaxy in Major League Soccer of America. That was the reason behind his exclusion form the squad, according to Coach Fabio Capello. He said:

"The reason that David is not in the squad is because he has not had any real match practice since playing in November," Capello said. "When I spoke with David on the phone yesterday, I advised him that he is still part of my plans and once he is playing regularly in America we will look closely at him again."

Beckham was practicing with the reserve team of Arsenal during this time hoping to impress England boss to win his 100th cap. Now, Beckham has to prove himself playing for Galaxy in order to win his place in England team when MLS season starts. However, the English media, fans, former players and premier league managers almost all the disappointed with the decision of Capello over the exclusion of David Beckham. Galaxy fans are also unhappy with Beckham being excluded from the match. Even the sponsors of FA (Football Association) are not happy as they were interested to see Beckham play their 100th match for England.

The Notable Absentees from England Squad

Besides David Beckham, there were some more notable absentees in the squad. To begin with, goal keeper Paul Robinson’s omission from the 30-man squad came as a surprise to many. Tottenham Hotspur goal keeper has had 41 appearances with England national team. Then West Ham United goal keeper, Robert Green’s omission was also unexpected to many as he has been in good form so far this season.

Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell was also overlooked in the squad. He played 73 matches for England team. Philip Neville of Everton was expected to make it to the squad, but could not impress Fabio Capello. Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was notable absentee from the 23-man squad.

Injury Woe for England Squad

England has found injury as another opponent other than Switzerland ahead of the friendly match. So, it has been a major concern for Fabio Capello. Earlier, England had already lost tow of their key players: Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King and Wigan Athletic striker Emile Heskey due to injury.

The most recent blow hit the England team as uncapped striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has been sidelined with a hamstring injury during his team’s match against Fulham yesterday. He has been replaced by Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe, who scored in his debut match for new club against after his recent move from Tottenham Hotspur. It is said that Capello insisted him to change the club as Defoe was not in the provisional 30-man squad for the friendly match, but he made it to the final squad right after the withdrawal of Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Who will Captain England in the Friendly against Switzerland

It has been common-a-question that who is going to Captain England in the upcoming friendly match against Switzerland. Well, England boss Fabio Capello has not declared the name of the captain of the squad though Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard is reportedly the most likely candidate for England squad. However, Capello is unlikely to appoint a captain permanently as he wishes to run an experiment giving the role to several players in order to find out the perfect person before England starts competitive football in September with the world cup qualifying matches. Regarding appointing a captain Fabio Capello said:

“I plan to name a captain for the Switzerland game on Tuesday, but I don’t expect to appoint a permanent captain until we start the qualifying games. I want to work closely with the players before deciding on this.”

So, you can see that England boss is trying to build the team for a longer time. It is definitely a good initiative. England’s performance in the last decade was inconsistent. So, England needs to have a good balanced side with some players capable of playing consistently well at this level of football.

England 23-man Squad

Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Scott Carson (Liverpool on loan at Aston Villa), Chris Kirkland (Wigan Athletic)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Micah Richards (Manchester City), Matthew Upson (West Ham United), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers)

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Portsmouth), Michael Owen (Newcastle United), Wayne Rooney, (Manchester United), Peter Crouch (Liverpool)

England vs Switzerland Friendly 2008: Switzerland Squad

Switzerland is not considered as a football power house in the world. They have little success in the football world compared to England. However, ahead of the friendly match, you can take them lightly because they have a balanced squad and their players are playing in various clubs of Europe. In fact, only five players of the 23-man squad are now playing in any Swiss clubs. All others are playing in most popular leagues of Europe. So, you can realize that their players are no less potential than their English counterparts.

Switzerland coach Kobi Kuhn has been in charge of Switzerland team since 2001. So, he knows very well about his side. On the other hand, this is the first match of England coach Fabio Capello in charge of England team. He has no previous experience of dealing with England team. So, it could be an advantage of Switzerland.

Anyway, I did not find flurry of news regarding Switzerland team ahead of the friendly match against England. Naturally, England team is now under focus as they are one of the best football playing nations in the world. The only new face in the Switzerland squad is forward Eren Derdiyok. He plays in Swiss club FC Basel. Switzerland team includes some young footballers along with a few veterans. So, I think, Switzerland has named a balanced side for the friendly match against England.

Switzerland 23-man Squad

England vs Switzerland: David Beckham to be Left Out of Switzerland Match

Now, it seems to be clear that David Beckham has to wait more to play his 100th match for England. Report has it that England coach Fabio Capello is going to exclude the former England captain from his primary squad for next month’s friendly match against Switzerland. There is speculation that Beckham, who also played under Capello while he was in Real Madrid, is yet to get match fitness back. The star footballer plays for L.A. Galaxy in Major League Football in America. However, he is now in vacation as it is off season in America.

Earlier, it was reported that Capello was interested to give Beckham his 100th Cap in the friendly against Switzerland. He has been out of any competitive football since November, and Capello has reportedly questioned on the quality of Major League Football.

Goal.com reported:

Apparently the manager will try to speak to Beckham this week before finalising his selection, but he has said privately that the player cannot be fully match-fit because he has not played a competitive game since late November.

Apparently the manager will try to speak to Beckham this week before finalising his selection, but he has said privately that the player cannot be fully match-fit because he has not played a competitive game since late November.

Guardian writes that Capello has found some talented players who are strong enough to replace David Beckham. Aaron Lennon of Tottenham Hotspur and David Bentley of Blackburn Rovers have caught the eye of Fabio Capello. There are many who believe that Capello largely contributed to Beckham’s move from Real Madrid last season. In fact, David Beckham hardly got into the starting line up in Capello’s tenure. Now, let us see how long David Beckham has to wait to play his 100th match for England.

On the same day of 1958, a plane crash took away 23 lives including eight Manchester Untied players and some officials with several got severely injured.

The day England and Switzerland face each other will see 50th anniversary of the Munich plane crash. So, ahead of the match, FA has already taken some initiative in order to show honor to those who lost their lives on the accident. England players will be wearing black arm band showing their grief on the occasion. FA has also received the permission from Manchester United over the plan.

Soccernet reported:

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington said he was confident fans of all clubs would respect the silence.

Bevington said: ``We will be having a minute's silence in respect of Munich at the England v Switzerland game.

``We believe very strongly that this should be and will be respected and that there's a feeling across the whole country that a minute's silence is the best and most appropriate way to remember everybody who lost their lives in the tragedy.''

It is a good way to show the tribute to those who lost their lives on that air crash. No doubt, it is one of most memorable tragedies involved in the history of football. We also pay our tribute and respect to those who lost their lives in that tragedy.

England vs Switzerland: Matt Taylor to be Called up for Switzerland Match?

Matt Taylor is not that much concerned over his national team call up. The Bolton Wanderers midfielder is now more interested to help his club to get over the relegation threat. Report have it that the 26 year old might be called up for England’s friendly match against Switzerland on 6 February.

Matt Taylor has joined Bolton Wanderers this month in the winter transfer move form Bolton rivals Portsmouth. He earlier played in U-21 England team. To him, getting into the England team would be a bonus for him as he is now more intended to play in the starting line up of Bolton Wanderers regularly in the season.

Sportinglife reported:

"I'm not worried about that [playing for England] - I've come here to play for Bolton and nothing else," said the 26-year-old.

"In my mind, all I am interested in is playing for Bolton Wanderers and getting back to playing regular first-team football and to where I was last season.

"Anything after that would be a bonus - but the main thing for me is to step over that white line in a Bolton shirt and do well."

Matt Taylore is a versatile player who fits in both left back and left midfield position. So, England coach Fabio Capello might find him an effective player ahead of Switzerland match of next month. Well, you can realize that he definitely has potential in him considering the fact that he played in U-21 England team. Matt Taylore is going to play his first match for Bolton tonight against Fulham. I think, an impressive performance for Matt Taylore tonight might convince Capello to feature him in the squad, to be declared on Friday.

England’s newly appointed coach Fabio Capello will made the squad public on Friday for the friendly match against Switzerland, which is set to be held on 6 February. The fans are curious to know if Capello will stick to the host of star players or go for young, talented players. Michael Owen is one of those star players in the line to might be left out of Capello’s squad for Switzerland friendly. The Newcastle United striker is currently going through a bad patch in domestic football. In the last 12 matches, he could hit only once for Newcastle Untied, amounting four goals from 18 matches so far this season.

However, Kevin Keegan, Newcastle United manager, has backed Owen, saying that he was fit and sharp enough and would capitalize the chances if given. However, the fact is that he is yet to get out of his patchy form, even though he has been playing continuously for the last few weeks for Newcastle.

Mirror reported:

He's fit enough, he's sharp enough, and maybe going with England and being part of that scene will give him opportunities. You don't need to tell me he will score if he gets opportunities."

Keegan said the rest of the Newcastle team - and not just Owen - are to blame for the ex-Liverpool star's goal drought.

"Michael will be at my door saying 'we are not creating anything.' That's what I would do if I was him because we aren't. When we got the quality going in the first half our football was excellent. You would have thought we were a top-four side, but the difference is we couldn't sustain it."

I think, Michael Owen has already proven what he has in him. What he needs is to prove his worth once again. What he needs is to get some goals in order to boost up his confidence level. Besides, it is also true that there are some young and talented strikers roaming around and Owen must face strong challenge to win a place in the starting line up of England team. However, I think, Michael Owen should at least be included in the England squad and brought on as substitutes in the friendly match, if not in the starting line up of England.

Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard, has recently spoken highly about England’s newly appointed coach Fabio Capello. The star midfielder has compared Capello with Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s former high profile coach. Terming Capello a proven winner, Lampard has said that he fells excitement to play under Capello. Frank Lampard does not have to wait long as England is squaring up against Switzerland on 6 February in a friendly match.

Goal.com reported:

“Capello is like Mourinho in that he has an aura — something special which marks him out against other coaches," mused the England international.

“He has won at the very highest level and you can compare him to Mourinho in that sense — and that is very exciting for me AND for England.

“He’s a proven winner. The credentials for the new England manager were he must have won trophies at the top level.

“He has won titles in two of the top leagues in the world. He’s such a big name and brings charisma and a sense of leadership to the job.”

Fabio Capello took over the England job after the termination of Steve McClaren following England’s failure to qualify for the EURO 2008 tournament. England is going to play their first match next month after suffering the crushing defeat to Croatia in the last qualifying match of EURO 2008. So, Fabio Capello must want to start his job with success and it is, for sure, Frank Lampard is one of his key players to bring out success for him as well as for England.

England vs Switzerland: Ashley Young to Replace David Beckham?

I have already posted an entry on the news that England coach Fabio Capello showed his interest to David Beckham ahead of the friendly match against Switzerland. He even asked his staffs to confirm about the fitness of David Beckham. Beckham and his fans became happy with the news as it would be his 100th cap for England.

However, report has it that Aston Villa winger, Ashley Young could replace the former England captain. Aston Villa manager, Martin O'Neill has revealed it following Young’s impressive performance in their 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. To him, Young has the potential to replace Beckham in the national side. Young is a quality free kick taker and he is now considered as a challenge for David Beckham, who is famous for his trade mark free kick.

Astonvilla reported:

The biggest word there was maybe 'when' as he didn't get enough of the ball and did get bullied out at times due to Blackburn playing with a five man midfield, although his free kick to save us a point was sublime and he so nearly repeated it at the end of the game with another curler, this time going just over. He certainly is a star in the making for Villa and I think that all those that questioned the price paid last January (over £9million) have now been well and truly answered. He was worth every penny and is now worth a good amount more.

David Beckham is now preparing with Arsenal for the friendly match against Switzerland. Beckham has earlier played under Capello in Real Madrid, before his move to L.A. Galaxy last year. It is also said that Beckham had to leave Real Madrid for Capello as Beckham hardly got chance in the starting line up of Capello in the last days in Real Madrid. So, there was a question mark if Capello would give him the chance to wear the England jersey for the 100th time in his career against Switzerland. There was a ray of hope when Capello showed interest about David Beckham, but now it seems that Beckham has to get over the challenges from the youngsters like Ashley Young in order to win his place in England side.
