Chelsea vs Roma Champions League 08-09: Preview and Live Score

High flying Chelsea will take on struggling Roma tomorrow (22 October 2008) in an exciting Champions league group A match at Stamford Bridge. After suffering a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to leader Inter Milan last Sunday, Roma is not expected to be full of confidence against Chelsea on the road. Chelsea has gone through a series of victories in premier league, overcoming a string of injuries in the last few weeks. There are many who have already started claiming that Chelsea did not look as formidable as they were in the past few weeks without the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, John Terry, Deco, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack, Joe Cole, Didier Drogba etc.

Match: Chelsea vs Roma; Champions League 2008-2009,

Group A

Date: 22 October 2008, Wednesday

Venue: Stamford Bridge, London, England

Kick off: 19:45 BST (British Standard Time)

So, ahead of the match, the two sides are in completely different state of mind at this moment and there is no way to deny that Chelsea is favorite against Roma. A victory in the match would lead last season’s runners-up to the brink of qualification for the round of 16 in the Champions League, while another defeat for Roma would further deplete their confidence level and fade away their hopes of qualifying to the knock out stages.

IHT reported:

Although Chelsea is tied on points with Liverpool, the Blues have overcome a series of injuries to top the English standings on goal difference with a string of stirring performances that culminated with Saturday's 5-0 win at Middlesbrough.

Chelsea has hit four goals or more in four of its 11 matches in all competitions and, if the players approach the level that they produced at Middlesbrough, Roma's defense could be in for a torrid time.

Roma finished second in Serie A last season which is definitely a pretty good performance, but this season they are struggling to get their form back and have already lost 4 games out of 7 so far in Serie A this season. For a runner-up team of previous series, this is definitely a disappointing performance.

Roma is currently at the 14th position in the league table with only 7 points to their credit. With a difference of 9 points with leader Inter Milan, it is pretty much sure that Roma is now a way behind the title race. Their Champions League performance is no better. Roma started their European campaign becoming a victim of one of the biggest upsets of the tournament when they were beaten by Romanian champion CFR Cluj 2-1 at home.

It was CFR Cluj’s first ever Champions league group stage appearance. Then in the second match, Roma defeated French side Bordeaux 3-1 on the road which came as a morale booster for Roma. However, Roma failed to hold on to the momentum gained in France as they suffered two back-to-back defeats that culminated with last Sunday’s crushing 4-0 defeat to Inter Milan.

Chelsea started their Europe campaign with a 4-0 victory over Bordeaux at home, they were held by a goalless draw by CFR Cluj. Despite a number of injury problems, Chelsea remained atop the league table of both premier league as well as Group A of Champions League. Deco and Terry came back with the match against Middlesbrough after recovering their injuries, while goalkeeper Petr Czech is expected to be back with the match against Roma.

The Times reported:

They are in pole position in the Premier League and a win over Roma at the Bridge would put last season’s runners-up firmly on course for the knockout stages in the Champions League.

Scolari could have goalkeeper Petr Cech back from the thigh injury that forced him out of Saturday’s win but, even with most of the other walking wounded likely to be sidelined again, Chelsea are still strong favourites to make it seven points from nine in Europe.

Roma does not have many injury problems. Rather they are expected to come out stronger against Chelsea than they did against Inter Milan as defenders Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci will be back in the squad after missing the Inter Milan match on suspension. Captain Francesco Totti has been in the starting line up against Inter Milan which was his first start this season since undergoing a knee surgery about six months back.

To be honest with you, there is hardly anybody who can deny that Chelsea is not favorite for this Champions League showdown, considering Chelsea’s imperious recent form and Roma’s continuous lackluster show. Moreover, Chelsea’s Stamford is known to be one of the most formidable fortress in the Europe which is very hard to break even for a big team at their top form. So, a draw should be satisfactory result for the Italian club, but they have to hold a winning approach in them, because if you play for a draw at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea is at their prime form, you are only digging hole under your feet.

AS Roma Facing Manchester United in the Quarter Final of Champions League 2007-08

Manchester United will face AS Roma in the quarter final of the Champions League this season. This is going to be the rematch of last year’s Champions league at the same stage of the competition. Both the clubs also met each other in the group stage of this year’s Champions League with Manchester United winning at Old Trafford, while the other match ended up with a draw at the Stadio Olimpico. So, it seems that the previous records talks in favor of English giants who saw off French Champions Olympique Lyonnais in the first knock out round of the competition. Roma also defeated Spanish Champion Real Madrid to secure their quarter final place.

Ken Ramsden, the secretary of Manchester United, said that Manchester was happy with the draw as they could be able to avoid facing any English club. Manchester United has to travel to Stadio Olimpico in the first leg match on either 1 April or 2 April. Indicating Manchester United’s impressive record against Roma, Ramsden said they did not any reason to fear Roma.

Goal.com reported:

“It’s a good draw,” said Ramsden.

“As a fan I’m glad we’re not playing an English team, it loses that flavour.

“We are away first which will please the manager. We have a good record against them so there’s no reason why we should be afraid that’s for sure.”

Regarding last year’s chaos made by the fans which affected the match badly in Rome. Ramsden expressed his hopes that there would be any such problem this year. He requested fans to follow the directions given to them in Rome.

Now, Manchester United has been in imperious form so far this season in Champions League. However, Roma would also be inspired after their two back to back successes against Real Madrid. Now, it is almost certain that an exciting match is waiting for the football fans. I hope to see two mouth watering clashes between AS Roma and Manchester United.

Real Madrid hosts AS Roma in a crucial second leg match of last 16 round of Champions League. It is a must-win match for Real Madrid as they have 2-1 first leg deficit. So, they need at least a 1-0 victory against Roma tonight in order to see off the Italian side from the first knock out round of Champions League.

The match will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. So, Real Madrid has home advantage tonight as they will take on Roma in front of their home supporters. For Roma, the equation is much easier as they have 2-1 first leg lead now. Roma needs only a draw to make it to the quarter final of Champions League.

Goal.com reported:

Taking a 2-1 lead into the second leg proved to be a huge relief for Roma, as they found themselves behind after just eight minutes of play at the Olimpico.
To come back from that deficit against the most successful club in European history was a great indicator of the strength and character that Spalletti’s men possess. This time around, though, they travel to the Bernabéu knowing that defeat is not an option. Roma will be guaranteed qualification to the next phase of the competition if they avoid losing in the Spanish capital this week.

Roma’s on road performance in Champions League so far this season is neither impressive nor poor. With a win, a defeat and a draw in their three group stage away fixtures proves their mixed away performance. Real Madrid’s current form is poor as they have lost four out of their last three matches in all competitions including their first leg defeat away to AS Roma.

Roma, in contrast, has much more consistency than Real Madrid as they projected four victories along with two defeats and a draw in their last seven matches in all competitions. Both teams have some injury. However, Real Madrid seems to be worst sufferers as they are missing their Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy who is out with an ankle injury. There are some more injury and suspension news out there which will definitely make Bernd Schuster worried ahead of the match against Roam.

Asianhandicap reported:

Bernd Schuster will be hoping that his charges can make full use of home advantage and turn the match in their favour even though they will be missing striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in this match. Nistelrooy is out with an ankle injury, while there are other players missing from the lineup as well. They include the likes of Sergio Juande Ramos who is suspended, as well as Christoph Metzelder (foot), Wesley Sneijder (rib) Javier Saviola (ankle) and Arjen Robben (ankle) who are all out injured.

However, the good news for Real Madrid fans is that Pepe, GUti and Robinho have been back for the match. They missed the first leg match. Roma is also missing some players who are out with injury. Marco Cassetti is suffered from shoulder injury. Roma fans can be happy as Juan is back in the squad overcoming from a foot injury. Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta are also in the final team contention in the match against Real Madrid.

Roma manager Spalletti said that his side wanted to go though Real Madrid though they have enough respect for Real Madrid. He insisted on maintaining the characteristics which had helped Roma to reach this level. However, he did not forget to revel that Madrid is a difficult opponent to face with.

Goal.com reported:

“Real deserve respect but we want to go through,” said Spalletti. “We have a big will to go there and battle with one of the greatest teams in the world.
“Respect should be a fundamental element of any team and especially Roma who play in important competitions both domestically and internationally.
“We need to maintain the characteristics which have taken us to this level.”

AS Roma welcomes Real Madrid at their home ground, Stadio Olimpico, on 19 February 2008. This is the first of the two-leg match of last 16 of Champions League 2007-2008. Roma and Real Madrid faced each other in number of occasions since the group match of 2001-2002 Champions League. The two clubs met for six times since then with Real Madrid winning four occasions and Roam winning one as the other being draw. Almost all the matches were full of eventful during the two popular European clubs.

Roma and Real Madrid have a number of similarities this season. To begin with, both teams have been impressive in the domestic league so far this season. Real Madrid is going smoothly in their pursuit to defend the liga title with five points clear off second-placed Manchester United. Roma, in the same way, has been playing well in Serie A. They stand second in the league table with 11 points behind the league leader Inter Milan. Though they are almost out of title race, they have been pretty much consistent in both domestic league and Champions League.

Roma managed a place in the last 16 finishing second to Manchester United in Group F of Champions League with losing only match to Manchester United. Real Madrid made it to the first stage of knock out round as the winner of Group C. So, neither Roma nor Real Madrid faced any strong challenge to win a place in the knock out stage of Champions League.

Similarity still remains in their recent performance. Both of them experienced a recent set back at the domestic league. Roma suffered a 1-0 defeat away by third-placed Juventus and thus lost the chance to move closer to Inter Milan at the top. Real Madrid suffered a 1-2 defeat away to Real Betis losing the chance to remain eight points clear at the top. This was the second back to back away defeat for Real Madrid at the league. So, they need to be aware of the Roma clash away from home.

Injury Worry: The Major Difference between AS Roma and Real Madrid

Yes, you will find a huge difference in terms of injury woe facing the two sides. Real Madrid is facing a flurry of injury woes ahead of the crucial away match. Real is going to miss midfielder Robinho, defenders Christoph Metzelder and Pepe, and striker Javier Saviola with midfielder Wesley Sneijder being the latest name added to the injury row for the Champions league showdown with Roma. Defender Gabriel Heinze is doubtful for the match. Sneijder has been out of action for between three to six weeks as he picked up a fractured rib during the training of Friday.

Guardian reported:

The Dutch international midfielder will miss both legs of his side's Champions League last 16 tie against AS Roma and up to seven league matches because of the injury.

Real will also be missing Brazil forward Robinho, centre-backs Christoph Metzelder and Pepe and striker Javier Saviola for the Roma match, while Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze is doubtful.

As I mentioned earlier that Roma has advantage over Real Madrid in terms of injury problem. The major concern of AS Roma ahead of the home clash against Real Madrid is their captain Francesco Totti. The forward has been out of form since his return from injury.

Goal.com reported:

The major worry for them is the fact that their talismanic captain Francesco Totti has been in poor form since returning from injury; this has been proven in recent performances as Spalletti’s men have managed just two goals in their past three outings.

Though Real Madrid is facing problem on the road, Captain Raul is not worried about it too much. He does not think that their patchy away form of late will have any impact on their performance against Roma. Coach Bernd Schuster echoed his Captain saying that no influence of the Betis setback to be seen against Roma. Indicating the motivation his boys had, he said that the Roma match is very important.

Sportinglife reported:

"We have a very important game with Roma in a couple of days, but I don't think this result will influence anything then," said Raul, whose side were undone by two quickfire Betis goals after Royston Drenthe had given them a sixth-minute lead.

"The match was complicated. We scored quickly and played well in the first 20 minutes," Raul added on his club's website.

Both Real Madrid and AS Roma will try their best to win the match. The match is now the center of all attention to the fans of both sides. With some of their front line players missing out for the match, Real Madrid has to cope up with situation. They have some talented players at the bench. So, Real Madrid is expected to fill the gap created with the injured players being out of first team contention. However, Roma will have home advantage, which is also very crucial for a match like this.

I think, Real Madrid will be happy even with a draw at Roma. They are missing a number of front line players and their recent away form is not satisfactory at all. Considering these two facts, I think, Real Madrid might play little safe on the upcoming match. If the plan works well then Real Madrid will have better chance at the second leg match at home. Roma, on the other hand, must be eager to pick up victory at the home match knowing the fact that it would not be easy to resist Real Madrid away. Whatever happens, I hope to see a mouth watering clash between AS Roma and Real Madrid.
