Match: AS Roma vs Real Madrid, First Leg of Round of 16, Champions League

Roma and Real Madrid have a number of similarities this season. To begin with, both teams have been impressive in the domestic league so far this season. Real Madrid is going smoothly in their pursuit to defend the liga title with five points clear off second-placed Manchester United. Roma, in the same way, has been playing well in Serie A. They stand second in the league table with 11 points behind the league leader Inter Milan. Though they are almost out of title race, they have been pretty much consistent in both domestic league and Champions League.

Roma managed a place in the last 16 finishing second to Manchester United in Group F of Champions League with losing only match to Manchester United. Real Madrid made it to the first stage of knock out round as the winner of Group C. So, neither Roma nor Real Madrid faced any strong challenge to win a place in the knock out stage of Champions League.

Similarity still remains in their recent performance. Both of them experienced a recent set back at the domestic league. Roma suffered a 1-0 defeat away by third-placed Juventus and thus lost the chance to move closer to Inter Milan at the top. Real Madrid suffered a 1-2 defeat away to Real Betis losing the chance to remain eight points clear at the top. This was the second back to back away defeat for Real Madrid at the league. So, they need to be aware of the Roma clash away from home.

Injury Worry: The Major Difference between AS Roma and Real Madrid

Yes, you will find a huge difference in terms of injury woe facing the two sides. Real Madrid is facing a flurry of injury woes ahead of the crucial away match. Real is going to miss midfielder Robinho, defenders Christoph Metzelder and Pepe, and striker Javier Saviola with midfielder Wesley Sneijder being the latest name added to the injury row for the Champions league showdown with Roma. Defender Gabriel Heinze is doubtful for the match. Sneijder has been out of action for between three to six weeks as he picked up a fractured rib during the training of Friday.

Guardian reported:

The Dutch international midfielder will miss both legs of his side's Champions League last 16 tie against AS Roma and up to seven league matches because of the injury.

Real will also be missing Brazil forward Robinho, centre-backs Christoph Metzelder and Pepe and striker Javier Saviola for the Roma match, while Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze is doubtful.

As I mentioned earlier that Roma has advantage over Real Madrid in terms of injury problem. The major concern of AS Roma ahead of the home clash against Real Madrid is their captain Francesco Totti. The forward has been out of form since his return from injury.

Goal.com reported:

The major worry for them is the fact that their talismanic captain Francesco Totti has been in poor form since returning from injury; this has been proven in recent performances as Spalletti’s men have managed just two goals in their past three outings.

Though Real Madrid is facing problem on the road, Captain Raul is not worried about it too much. He does not think that their patchy away form of late will have any impact on their performance against Roma. Coach Bernd Schuster echoed his Captain saying that no influence of the Betis setback to be seen against Roma. Indicating the motivation his boys had, he said that the Roma match is very important.

Sportinglife reported:

"We have a very important game with Roma in a couple of days, but I don't think this result will influence anything then," said Raul, whose side were undone by two quickfire Betis goals after Royston Drenthe had given them a sixth-minute lead.

"The match was complicated. We scored quickly and played well in the first 20 minutes," Raul added on his club's website.

Both Real Madrid and AS Roma will try their best to win the match. The match is now the center of all attention to the fans of both sides. With some of their front line players missing out for the match, Real Madrid has to cope up with situation. They have some talented players at the bench. So, Real Madrid is expected to fill the gap created with the injured players being out of first team contention. However, Roma will have home advantage, which is also very crucial for a match like this.

I think, Real Madrid will be happy even with a draw at Roma. They are missing a number of front line players and their recent away form is not satisfactory at all. Considering these two facts, I think, Real Madrid might play little safe on the upcoming match. If the plan works well then Real Madrid will have better chance at the second leg match at home. Roma, on the other hand, must be eager to pick up victory at the home match knowing the fact that it would not be easy to resist Real Madrid away. Whatever happens, I hope to see a mouth watering clash between AS Roma and Real Madrid.
