Euro 2008 is going to be organized jointly by Austria and Switzerland. The tournament kicks off from 7 June 2008 with 16 teams participating in it. Austria and Switzerland have won automatic berth in the tournament as host countries, while 14 other participants of the 16-team tournament have come through the qualifying round to the Euro 2008 final. The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups of four teams at the group stage. All the four teams of each of the groups will play against each other in a round robin league system and at the end the group stage top two teams from each group advance to the quarter final of Euro 2008. From the quarter final, the tournament follows knock out system- meaning the losing side of each of the matches will be eliminated form the tournament, while the winners will progress to the next stage. Here, I am giving the grouping of Euro 2008 tournament:

Group A

Group B

Group C

Group D

Switzerland

Austria

Netherlands

Greece

Czech Republic

Croatia

Italy

Sweden

Portugal

Germany

Romania

Spain

Turkey

Poland

France

Russia

Greece is the defending champion of the tournament as they outplayed host Portugal in the final of Euro 2004 to clinch the first ever major title in football. However, there are a number of favorites in the tournaments including Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain etc. In fact, Greece is not considered as that much favorite this time, even though they are the defending champions. Now, let us see who the favorites from each of the groups are.

Group A

In this group, Portugal and Czech Republic are favorites to progress to the knock out stage. Portugal is the runner up of the previous tournaments, while Czech Republic was one of the semi finalists of Euro 2004. However, Switzerland will try their best to capitalize on home condition as they are considered as a good side. Turkey is best known for their 2002 world cup success as they finished third in the tournament, but they could not reach the final tournament of Euro 2004. So, this time they will try to make it up, projecting some excellent performance in Euro 2008.

Group B

It seems to be the easiest group in the tournament with two debutant teams: host Austria and Poland. Germany and Croatia are the favorites from this group. Germany is the three times champions in the tournaments, while Croatia is going to have only third appearance in the tournament. However, the recent form of Croatia is excellent as they came to the final of Euro 2008 winning the Group E, the group England failed to win one of the top two spots. However, it is noteworthy that Poland finished atop the Group A of qualifying round leaving Poland in the second spot of the group. Host Austria may not have any big hope, but using the home advantage, Austria might cause an accident in the group stage.

Group C

This is considered as the ‘Group of Death’ in the presence of three tournament favorites: world champion Italy, world cup runner up France and Netherlands. The other member of the group is Romania, who finished the qualifying round becoming the champion of Group G, forcing Netherlands to finish second in group G. So, it is hard to predict that who are going to advance to the next round. However, Italy, France and Netherlands are the favorites from Group C.

Group D

I think, this group will see a stiff competition among the four teams for winning the top two positions of the group. Defending Champion Greece is in this group, alongside Spain, Sweden and Russia. Spain and Greece seem to be favorite in the group, but I think, in form Russia and Sweden have the ability to make it to the next round. Russia finished second to Croatia in the qualifying round, leaving England in the third place of the group. Sweden is also a strong side in Europe. Sweden reached the quarter final of Euro 2004. So, Group D is another hard group.

There are eight venues in the tournament: four in Austria and four in Switzerland. Here, I am giving the name of the stadiums, and the cities where the stadiums are located:

I'm a big Holland fan so I hope they'll get through to the next round despite having to beat Italy and France!
