Venus Williams has finished the year, winning the title of year-ending WTA Sony Ericsson Championships. The veteran tennis star defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 earlier this month to clinch the title of Sony Ericsson Championships. Ranked 6th in the WTA ranking, the American star saw a number of successes in 2008 including her 5th Wimbledon title. Former no. 1 of women’s tennis won 3 WTA titles in total this year, aside from Wimbledon title.

Venus Williams faced stiff competition from Vera Zvonareva in the first set in the final and lost the set in tie-breaker. However, she bounced back strongly to claim the second set by 6 to love. Zvonareva tried to come back in the third and the deciding set, but Venus Williams did not leave any more chance for Vera Zvonareva and wrapped up the set 6-2. However, Vera Zvonareva should not have any regret for the defeat as she lost to a champion player in the final after beating some of the top players like Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanvovic and Jelena Jankovic in the league and Elena Dementieva in the semi final. In fact, the Russian was lowest-ranked participant in the tournament.

Venus Williams once against showed that she has a lot to give in tennis. The kind of rhythm and power she used in the match were evident of her greatness. Now, let us see if Venus Williams continues her excellent form next year too.

Top Ranked Players to participate in Rogers Cup 2008 Tennis Tournament

Rogers Cup 2008 will begin on 23rd July 2008 and will continue till 3rd August. Some of the top ranked players of women’s tennis are going to take part in the tournament, set to be held at the Uniprix Stadium, Montreal in Canada. In fact, seven out of top ten players of WTA ranking are to participate in the tournament.

Moreover, top three players of WTA ranking are going to appear in the same tournament for the first time since Wimbledon 2008. So, naturally Rogers Cup has already had some attraction to lure the tennis fans around the world. This is a Tire I tournament on WTA tour and offers US$1 340 000 as prize money. So, Rogers Cup has enough ground to attract the top ranked tennis players.

Tennis fans will get to see top ranked Ana Ivanovic, world no. 2 Jelena Jankovic and world no. 3 Maria Sharapova all together in this tournament for the first time after Wimbledon 2008, perhaps for the last time before Beijing Olympics Games, set to begin from the next month.

Besides the top three, fifth ranked Elena Dementieva, seventh ranked Venus Williams, eighth ranked Anna Chakvetadze and ninth ranked Dinara Safina are expected to participate in Rogers Cup 2008. Justine Henin will not be able to defend her Rogers Cup title this year as the former world no. 1 declared her retirement from professional tennis before French Open 2008.

Maria Sharapova started the season winning Australian Open 2008 title, but failed to star in French Open 2008 and Wimbledon 2008, on both occasions failed to reach the quarter final. Top ranked Ana Ivanovic won her first grand slam title this year in French Open 2008, before failing completely in Wimbledon 2008. However, Ivanovic’s consistency is pretty much satisfactory so far this year. Second ranked Jelena Jankovic could not win any grand slam title yet, but she is also very consistent on the court. The Serbian reached the semi final of Australian Open and French Open this year, while in Wimbledon she was eliminated at the fourth round. However, Jankovic has been more impressive on WTA tour tournaments, wining the title of Tier I tournament on Rome and reaching the final of another Tier I tournament in Miami this year. In fact, Jelena Jankovic was the runner up of Rogers Cup 2007.

Fifth ranked Elena Dementieva has made a strong come back so far this year. She reached the semi final of Wimbledon 2008 and won a Tier II tournament in Dubai. With Wimbledon 2008 triumph fresh in mind, Venus Williams is expected to be one of the most favorites in Rogers Cup 2008. Venus Williams, at seventh in WTA ranking, will definitely look to win Rogers Cup 2008 in order to uphold her current confidence level ahead of U.S. Open 2008 tournament. Eighth ranked Anna Chakvetadze has not been at her best so far this year, failing to reach the quarter final of any of the three grand slam tournaments. Last time, the Russian won a singles title on WTA tour was in 2005. So, an impressive performance at Rogers Cup 2008 would definitely come as a confidence booster for her. French Open 2008 finalist Dinara Safina has already made something special this year playing her first ever grand slam final. Ninth ranked Russian is now at good from and could bring out some success at Rogers Cup 2008.

Well, there is no doubt, the top ranked players are the hot favorites in Rogers Cup 2008, but do not write off the players outside the top ten, because surprise can come at any stage of any tournament like Chinese Jheng Zie played the semi final of Wimbledon 2008, becoming the first player from China to reach the semi final of a grand slam tournament.

Venus Williams in French Open 2008

Six grand slam titles winner, Venus Williams, could never win French Open title in her career so far. The best French Open performance of once world no. 1 ranked Venus Williams came in 2002, where she lost to younger sister Serena Williams. Now, ahead of French Open 2008 gets underway, this American star must be gunning for her first grand slam title at Roland Garros. French Open 2008 is going to kick off from 25 May 2008. So, there is only couple of days left before the biggest clay court tennis tournament of the world gets underway.

Venus Williams is now world no. 8 in WTA ranking. Last year, Venus Williams won her fourth Wimbledon title, taking her overall grand slam tally to six. The 27 year old star finished the year 8th in WTA ranking. However, she could not show anything special in Australian Open 2008 as she got out of the tournament at the quarter final being defeated by then fourth seed Ana Ivanović 7–6(3), 6–4. In the recently held Italian Open, Venus failed to reach the semi final being lost to Jelena Jankovic 5–7, 6–2, 6–3 in the quarter final.

I have already mentioned that Venus Williams was once world no. 1. So, I do not think she has anything left to prove herself. However, when it comes to achievement and title, she is yet to win her first Australian Open and French Open. The talent she has in her, I think, she could easily end up winning the French Open 2008 title.

Venus Williams vs Ana Ivanovic: Quarter Final of Australian Open 2008

Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic are going to face each other once again in the grand slam tournament. Both of them progressed into the quarter final of Australian Open 2008 after projecting straight-sets victories over their fourth round opponents. Venus Williams had to assert every bit of her mental strength to survive against the resistance of Marta Domachowska from Poland in her 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Fourth Seed, Ana Ivanovic had lesser challenge from Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the fourth round. Ivanovic secured the first set 6-1, but she as pushed all the way in the second set, before winning it in tie-breaker 7-6 (7-2). Both Ivanovic and Venus have not dropped any set in the tournament. So, it seems that both of them are in their right shape.

However, to tell the truth, six-time grand slam winner, Venus Williams has not been in her prime form so far in the tournament. The US Open reigning champion is yet to reach her best in the tournament. Though Venus Williams reeled off the victories in two sets, she often looked fragile with unexpected mistakes.

Now, ahead of the match against Ana Ivanovic, whom she defeated four times in the past including twice in the grand slam tournaments last year, Venus Williams has expressed that she considers herself as a big match player and enjoys the challenge.

The Age reported:

"I think she's a great player. I know she'll do her best tomorrow," she said. "I do consider myself a big-match player. I do enjoy those times. I enjoy the battle. I enjoy the challenge. And that's about it. I'll be supporting Serena and going for my own win."

Well, it is true that Venus Williams always plays well in the big matches, especially in the high profile matches. She is though to be one of the pioneers of power tennis in the modern age. Venus also likes to play big and hard shorts, which, to many, are the main strength of the America.

Ana Ivanovic, though lost all four times she met Venus Williams in the past, is now pretty much confident to atone for her defeats. Ana Ivanovic has also admitted that Venus is a big hitter.

Herald Sun reported:

"She's definitely a tough opponent," Ivanovic said. "Last two grand slams I lost to her. Exactly the time for some revenge. I think I'm a little bit of a different player. I've got fitter and stronger on the court.

"And also these courts are a little bit slower than US Open, so I think that's something that definitely suits me better because she's a big server and she likes to go for the big shots."

"Yeah, definitely it is, because she's a big hitter and she likes to dominate the rallies," Ivanovic said.

"So it will be just important for me to stay there, stay there with her, and still try to get that first shot."

Ana Ivanovic had a breakthrough season in 2007 with reaching the final of French Open, before making it to the semi final of Wimbledon. Ivanovic will definitely try to take the revenge of her back to back defeats to Venus Williams last year. However, the Serbian has been in an imperious form so far in the tournament and reaching the quarter final is the best ever Australian Open performance of Ana Ivanovic. Now, let us see if she can go further in the tournament, taking the revenge over Venus Williams.

Venus Williams to Face Ana Ivanovic in the Quarter Final of Australian Open 2008

Venus Williams advanced in to the quarter final of Australian Open after projecting another two-set but hard-fought victory. The eighth seed had to face strong resistance in the 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marta Domachowska in the fourth round of Australian Open 2008. Venus Williams is now gearing up to face Ana Ivanovic in another grand slam tournament. Yes, Ana Ivanovic is her quarter final opponent.

The match was not as easy for Venus Williams as the score line shows. Actually, the American was challenged hardly in both the sets by the Polish qualifier Marta Domachowska, who has had a great tournament in Australian Open 2008.

Sportal.com reported:

Williams didn't have it all her own way, with Domachowska breaking her serve twice in the opening set. Venus was able to prevail 6-4, but not before one hell of a fight. The No.8 seed took an early lead in the second set, but just when she looked set to stroll to victory, Domachowka fought back to level again. It took every bit of the six-time Grand Slam title winners determination to eventually get over the line 6-4 6-4.

The Wimbledon 2007 winner, Venus Williams has not dropped any set in the tournament. However, she was not up to the mark with her performance. The six grand slam titles winner, Venus Williams, has to face some tougher challenges from Ana Ivanovic in the quarter final of the tournament. She faced the Serbian four times in the past and won all the matches. Now, let us see if Venus Williams can continue her impressive run against Ana Ivanovic in the quarter final match.

Ana Ivanovic Set up Quarter Final Clash with Venus Williams in Australian Open 2008

Ana Ivanovic stormed into the quarter final of Australian Open 2008 as she continued her impressive run in the tournament. The fourth seed, Ivanovic projected a straight-sets victory over Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, in the fourth round yesterday. The Serbian dominated over her Danish opponent in the 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory. Ana Ivanovic started the match in style, reeling off the first set in just 31 minutes. However, Ana Ivanovic faced much more resistance from Caroline Wozniacki in the second set which was decided in a tie-breaker. With this victory, Ana Ivanovic set up another grand slam meeting with Venus Williams in the quarter final.

Herald Sun reported:

Wozniacki showed more determination in the second set, which she forced to a tie-breaker, but Ivanonvic won it with the loss of only two points.
Ivanonovic's 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory lines her up with Venus Williams for a place in the semi-finals.

Venus Williams defeated Marta Domachowska from Poland in her fourth round match 6-4, 6-4. Both Ivanovic and Venus have not dropped any set in the tournament yet. However, they are going to face some strong challenges in the quarter final clash from each other. Ana Ivanovic met Venus Williams on four occasions and lost in all the matches. Now, let us see if Ana Ivanovic can win against Venus Williams for the first time.

The Indian star could not go beyond third round of Australian Open so far.

It is true that she could not dominate over her opponent in the second round math. After an impressive start, Sania Mirza lost his rhythm in the middle of the game. Even the final set, she had to come from 3-1 down to wrap up the match. Her third round opponent, Venus Williams was not in her great form against Camille Pin in the second round. Though she managed to claim the victory in straight sets, she was not that much impressive with her game. She made many mistakes and was a bit lucky that her opponent also continued to do the mistakes.

Sania Mirza, in her post match reaction, has revealed she is excited to play Venus Williams, whom Sania Mirza described as one of the best players of present day. She has also stated that she will not have the advantaged that she had in the second round match because of the mistakes done by her opponent.

Tennis News reported:

Q. Do you approach the next match in any different way?
SANIA MIRZA: Yeah, I'm just going to go for it. I have nothing to lose. I'm very excited, actually, to play Venus. I think the last time I played her was in Stanford a couple years ago, and I haven't played her since. And obviously I feel like I'm playing well, and I'm playing better tennis than I was a couple of years ago. And so is she. But, you know, it's ‑‑ yeah, I'm very excited to play her, and rest up tomorrow.
Q. Venus said she expected you to be very aggressive. She said you're an aggressive type of player.
SANIA MIRZA: Well, it's not a secret anymore. I think everyone knows that by now, that I like to go for it. And I think she was surprised that I was not as aggressive. So I think it's a given because ‑‑ yeah, I've been on the circuit long enough for people to know what's good and what's not good in my game, relatively.

Moreover, Sania Mirza also revealed that it was mental strength that helped her to overcome her second round opponent. So, it is pretty much sure that Sania Mirza will try her best to take the chance against her. Even she has also said that she has nothing to lose against Venus Williams. Sania Mirza and Venus Williams are going to face each other in the third round of Australian Open 2008. Both of them confirmed their third round places with hard-fought victories in the second round yesterday. Sania Mirza defeated Timea Bacsinszky from Switzerland 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, that took one hour and 44 minutes. Eighth seed Venus Williams, though, took two sets to defeat Frenchwomen Camille Pin 7-5 6-4, she was pushed all the way to clinch the victory in the second round.

Sania Mirza got a good start winning the first set 6-1 within 22 minutes. However, Bacsinszky fought back in the second round pushing the match to the final set. Even in the last set, Sania could not seal the victory easily as she had to come back from 3-1 down. In her post match reaction the Indian tennis has insisted that she was mentally stronger than her opponent.

AFP reported:

"She was in the match till the end, and I think I was just stronger a bit mentally. I hung in there very well," she said.

"I'm very pleased by winning like this today because a lot has been happening in the last couple of weeks off the court, and I just feel I was mentally still strong enough to come through a match like that.

"I mean, I was down 3-1, 30-all (in third). You know, I could have just said, 'I'm just mentally not there'. It would have been a good excuse even for myself.

"But I didn't want to do that. I wanted to come through. And I proved to myself that I'm mentally strong enough to do that. "

Yes, Sania has undergone a though time recently with the national flag controversy that has already reached the court. Sania Mirza was out of action most of the time last year with injury. However, the recurring injuries could not mar his performance as she has been pretty much consistent on the court.

American Venus Williams also faced stronger challenge from Camille Pin. She was down in both the sets against Camille Pin in the match. Actually, Venus roared in the right time giving no chance to her opponent. Both of them were struggling with their services and failed to capitalize on the advantages. Camille Pin took a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Venus Williams came back in the match and finally set up her clash with Sania Mirza.

The Press Association reported:

Both players had trouble holding their own serve and it was fitting that the eighth seed sealed victory on the Rod Laver Arena by breaking the Frenchwoman as she converted a second match point opportunity.

A competitive first set that featured an incredible nine breaks of serve went to Williams after the American broke Pin when leading 6-5 courtesy of a crunching forehand down the line that was followed by a return from the Frenchwoman that landed beyond the baseline.

Sania Mirza vs Venus Williams: Head to Head

Now, Sania Mirza and Venus Williams are going to take on each other in their third round match in Australian Open. Q. Talk about the match. Almost everything was going well, except for the serve, right?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah. I definitely would like to have a higher first‑serve percentage. But it's not something that I'm worried about. I still feel like I can get my serve in. My second serve nowadays has a lot of kick. Definitely bouncing really high. So it was a good day.

US Open 2007: Justine Henin and Venus Williams Progress to the Third Round

US Open 2007 has already been started. This is the last grand slam of the year. Till now, all the favorites of the tournament have progressed to the second without causing any upset. Wimbledon 2007 winner Venus Williams defeated Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru in two direct sets. However, to tell the truth she was not so impressive in the match though Venus could easily enter into the third round of US Open 2007. Venus made a grand slam record of speedy serve in her first round match. She served 129 mph in the first match and now it is the speediest serve of women’s tennis in grand slam.

World no. 1 Justine Henin could also enter into the third round defeating Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova by 6-4, 6-0. This Belgian tennis star is now looking at his seventh Grand Slam title. However, world no. 9 lost being the only top 10 star to go out of the tournament.

ABC News reported:
So far, No. 9 Daniela Hantuchova was the lone top-10 player to lose. In all, it was an early breeze for those at the top.
A night earlier, Maria Sharapova was positively giddy.
About her sparkling red dress. Her bejeweled handbag. Her picture in the hallway leading to center court. About everything at the U.S. Open, really.

Maria Sharapova has earlier come up with his new red dress in the court and still now, she is in right track to defend the title. US Open 2007 is till open and I think Maria Sharapova has a greater chance to reach at the final. Now, let’s see what is going to happen in the next few days.

Wimbledon 2007: A New Hope for the Williams Sisters?

You do not have to work hard to recall the dominance of the Williams sisters over the tennis world in the recent past. Even two to three years ago, any Grand Slam tournaments became the synonyms to the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams used to be thought as the ultimate finalist of any Grand Slam tournament as both of them appeared in six Grand Slam finals from 2001 to 2003. I am not sure if there was any other example of such dominance over the tennis world by two siblings at the same period of time.

After 2003, performance of both the sisters started deteriorating and some new stars like Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin came into lime light. Yet in 2005, both Venus Williams and Serena Williams could win a Grand Slam title each after two years. Venus won Wimbledon 2005 and Serena won Australian Open 2005. However, no more dominating image was seen in their performance. Nevertheless, Williams’ fans could hope for the revival of their career but nothing happened in the next one year as neither of them could even reach to any Grand Slam finals in 2006.

However, the year 2007 has been a new hope for both Venus and Serena as both the sisters has already won a Grand Slam each till now. Again, Serena won Australian Open 2007 and Venus won Wimbledon 2007. However, fans do not want to see the reversal of 2005. U.S. Open 2007 is yet to be held. So, let’s see if the Williams sisters can really revive their career and get back their dominance over the tennis world.

Venus Williams: Wimbledon 2007 Champion

Venus Williams is surely the happiest person tonight. She has won the title of Wimbledon 3 times before but none is sweet like winning the title of Wimbledon 2007. In the final, she defeated Marian Bartoli by 6-4, 6-1. Venus was ranked 23rd in the tournament but she showed that she is one of the best female players to play in Wimbledon’s grass court.

Venus Williams had to work hard in the first set. At one stage, she led 3-0 but then Marian Bartoli fought back hard and leveled 3-3 and then 4-4. The second set was totally an one sided affair. Well, Venus was stronger in two sides: 1. Venus Williams could serve much better than Marian Bartoli and 2. Venus could play cross court shots much better.

After winning the match, Venus thanked her family and she remembered the contribution of Billy Jean King in the development of women’s tennis. She also praised Marian Bartoli.
