Germany
is going to face Austria in a crucial Group B match at the Ernst Happel, Vienna on 16 June 2008. The result of this much-awaited Austria vs Germany match will play a big part to decide who is going to join Croatia in the quarter final of Euro 2008 from this group. This is a ‘do or die’ match for both Austria and Germany, because both the sides are active in the quarter final race. Germany needs at least a draw from the match, while co-hosts Austria has to win over the three times Euro champions Germany in order to progress to the next round of Euro 2008 tournament.

Match: Austria vs Germany, Group B, Euro 2008

Date: 16 June 2008

Venue: Ernst Happel, Vienna in Austria

Germany started their Euro 2008 campaign with an excellent 2-0 victory over Poland in the opening match. However, Germany lost to Croatia unexpectedly in the second match by 2-1. Germany could not continue their impressive opening match form in the second match, leaving their hope of making it to the last eight of Euro 2008 being held up. All three goals Germany scored so far in the tournament came from striker Lukas Podolski and with these three goals, Podolski has become one of the contenders of highest goal scorer’s award.

For Austria, they are a bit unlucky as they could not manage a victory so far despite creating a number of goal scoring chances in their first two matches, but could not capitalize on those chances. In the first match, Austria lost to Croatia 1-0. In the second match against Poland, a late goal snatched away the victory from Austria and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Otherwise, even a draw against Germany would have ensured a quarter final place for Austria. Now, ahead of the match between Austria and Germany, football fans around the world are now very excited and they are eagerly waiting for the match.

Austria vs Germany: Head to Head

Austria and Germany met each other on seven occasions previously in which Germany had better success rate with five victories, and Austria could manage a victory over Germany in 1978 World Cup. Being defeated by Austria, Germany was eliminated from 1978 world cup: which they term as a "Shame of Cordoba". Now, let us have a look at the recent form of the two sides. The most recent encounter between the sides came in February this year where Austria dominated the first 60 minutes of the match and created a number of chances, but could not score due to lack of proper execution. In the end, Germany ended up winning the match by 3-0.

Austria’s recent form is not satisfactory at all. Out of their last seven matches, Austria won only one match along with three defeats and three draws. Germany, on the other hand, has had a very good recent record including four victories, two draws and the defeat to Croatia in the previous match.

Austria vs Germany: Austria is Looking for “Second Cordoba

As I earlier mentioned that Germans lost to Austria at the 1978 FIFA World Cup and went out of the tournament. Now, another big occasion is waiting there tonight. Germans need to survive, while Austria stands up in their way. However, the coaches of both sides are not that much interested to give a thought about Austria's triumph in 1978 FIFA World Cup tournament against Germany. German coach Loew does not want to relate that match with the upcoming match.

International Herald Tribune reported:

"Cordoba is really not an issue we talk about a lot," Loew said Sunday. "Many of the players were not even born back then. The media tries to play up the issue, but you can't compare the two matches."

"They want their shot at the quarterfinals," Loew said. "They are under as much pressure as we are but it is impossible to compare the two matches. We will impose our game upon our opponent."

Austria coach Hickersberger played that match 30 years back. However, even he is not that much interested to cherish their victory over the defending champion Germany ahead of the upcoming match.

International Herald Tribune reported:

"Playing against Germany for me is something special," Hickersberger said. "What happened 30 years ago doesn't play any special role for me. We won in Cordoba but that is as far as it goes."

Austria vs Germany: What the Coaches are Thinking about?

Austria coach Herzog said that his side proved what was needed to bring out success. He is very happy with the style of football his team has played in the tournament so far:

CNN reported:

"Over the last two years, many were laughing at us because we only were at the European Championship because we were hosting it," Herzog said. "It's great that we are still in with a chance of advancing. We've proven impressively that we can play some good football."

Germany coach Loew also seems to be very confident ahead of the match against Switzerland. He indicated that his side would not take Austria lightly, meaning Austria will achieve more than enough attention from Germany now.

Reuters reported:

"We definitely won't underestimate them and tomorrow we will go to our limit and beyond," Loew told reporters on Sunday.

"Of course we suffered a (2-1) defeat against Croatia (on Thursday) but tomorrow our team will definitely step on to the pitch with a very different demeanour," said Loew.

"Every player is aware tomorrow in Germany some 30 million fans will probably be watching us and putting their hopes on us, hence it is our duty to our fans, to our nation to play a completely different game.

"We will be full of energy and confidence."
