Ahead of the mouth watering showdown, both teams are gearing up to win the match, going a step ahead to the premier league title. Manchester United is at the top of the premier league with 67 points, while Liverpool is still active in the title race with 59 points. So, a victory on the weekend will definitely boost up the winning side in their pursuit to win the title.

In terms of points, both Manchester United and Arsenal are equal as the Gunners also acquired 67 points. However, Manchester United has a match at hand at this moment. Tonight, Manchester United hosts Bolton Wanderers, who are now in the relegation zone in the premier league. So, winning over Bolton will see Manchester United go three points clear at the top of the point table. No doubt, it is a good chance for Manchester United to boost up their confidence level before weekend meeting with Liverpool.

Leaving the bitter past, Liverpool has been back to the right track. They are now in a run of seven consecutive victories in all competition. Out of last six Premier league matches, Liverpool won five matches with a draw in the other. Liverpool was not in their great from even couple of months ago. It seemed that Liverpool was going to become the synonym of inconsistency with their topsy-turvy performances both in domestic leagues and in Europe. However, Rafael Benitez men bounced back in style and lit up their premier league hope putting on some excellent performances in the last few premier league matches. Liverpool saw off Italian giants Inter Milan in their way to reach the quarter final of Champions League.

Inspirational from of Spanish forward Fernando Torres has been instrumental of Liverpool’s impressive run of results for the last few weeks. Torres scored nine goals in his last six games for Liverpool including two hat-tricks against Middlesbrough and West Ham and thus took his goal tally to 27 in all competition. In fact, the forward is now the second highest goal scorer in premier league with 20 league goals to his credit. Manchester United’s Portuguese midfielder Ronaldo is just ahead of him with 22 league goals. Torres along with Captain Steven Gerrard has formed a lethal combination in the Liverpool attack.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has expressed his hopes regarding their meeting with Manchester United away at Old Traffod. Indicating his side’s impressive form and goal scoring capabilities of late, the Spaniard has said that Liverpool is now looking forward to playing against Manchester United. Alonso has also praised his in-form countrymen Fernando Torres.

Sky Sports reported:

"We are in a good moment, playing well and scoring goals, and now we have to think of the next game against Man Utd," Alonso told Liverpool's official website.

"It is going to be a big game, playing at Old Trafford, we know their qualities but we are really looking forward to it."

"Fernando has improved," Alonso continued. "He has got rid of the pressure he had at Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United is now in a good position as they are already at the top of the league table with a match at hand. If they can really pick up full three points from the match against Bolton Wanderers then they will certainly go into the Super Sunday tie with Liverpool being a bit relaxed. Manchester United defeated Liverpool 1-0 away at the Anfield stadium in the first half of the season. So, Ferguson will fancy repeat the success once again, this time at their home ground.

Despite Manchester United’s hardly-fought 1-0 victory at Derby County last Saturday, their manager Sir Zlex Ferguson thinks that his side has played terrific football recently. Stressing on the chances his side has been creating in every matches, he has termed it a good penetration in the team. However, the reality is that Manchester United scored only three goals in their last two matches. Considering the class of Manchester United and the opponent like Derby County, it can not be something to cherish. Still, Manchester United is still in the right track in their titled defense.

Guardian reported:

"There are big games coming up and Liverpool is one of them, especially when you consider Chelsea are playing Arsenal on the same day," said the United manager. "But when you see what happened at Derby on Saturday, not taking our chances, you realise you can't take anything for granted. Sure, there are big weekends ahead but the other matches are just as important. If we perform well and take our chances then we'll win the match against Bolton. But it's important we respect our opponents.

"Some of our football recently has been terrific and there's good penetration in the team. It's encouraging that we're making so many chances. Perhaps the forwards just need to relax a little in front of goal."

Even a few months ago, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was in intense pressure with Liverpool’s inconsistent performance was going on sheer consistently. Now, the situation has been changed drastically after some continuous success in both domestic league and Champions League. His side cut the long gap back with the top teams of the league and now Liverpool is now just eight points behind the leaders Manchester United and Arsenal, though the difference could be increased, depending on the result of Manchester United’s match against Bolton Wanderers. There were many who wrote off Liverpool’s chance at the league. Even, the coach, players and the supporters were not hopeful regarding premier league success. However, now manager Benitez himself claimed themselves still active in the title race.

Sky Sports reported:

"How near we finish to the top now will be interesting," the Reds boss told the club's official website.

"We have been criticised this season, but let us see where we are in three or four weeks.

"We have important games and if we win them we will be a lot closer. If we can beat Manchester United we will be closer to the top, and that will give us more confidence.

"If we beat Everton after that then we will be closer still. Maybe, maybe we can be closer if we do not talk too much about it.

So, it seems that Manchester United is going to face a ruthless Liverpool on the weekend. It is true that Liverpool has a long way to go in the league in order to taste the premier league title for the first time since 1989-1990. Manchester United, in contrast, is the defending champion and will definitely try their best to hold the title.

I think, the weekend clash would be a big taste for both Manchester United and Liverpool. It is not only worth of three points. Both of the clubs have big matches ahead in the following season. Specially, Liverpool will face Arsenal, while Manchester United has to face A.S. Roma in Champions League. So, a victory would not only bring three points but also give enough confidence to the winning side ahead of the upcoming matches of both Premier league and Champions league.

You do not need to be a specialist to understand the significance of the match and how much desperate both the teams would be to clinch the victory. I think, Manchester United has a great squad with a good combination of young and experienced players and the deepness of the Manchester squad seems to be worthy enough. Liverpool, in contrast, does not have so many stars in its squad, but what always makes me impress about Liverpool is their positive football. They play as a team and have some effective players. Given their recent form in evidence, I think, Manchester United is going to face the toughest hurdle of the season on the weekend.
