Manchester United will welcome their city rivals Manchester City in a premier league derby on Sunday. So, it is easily understood that the match is now the center of all focus among the fans of both clubs. However, this is not the only reason behind the significance of the match. Manchester United will show honor to the 23 victims of the Munich air crash and they must try their best to win the match which will be the best way to mark the 50th anniversary of the disaster.

Well, Manchester United has been in imperious form the last few months. Though they have just been dropped in the league point table and now stand second with two points behind leader Arsenal after the 1-1 draw against Tottenham in their recent premier league match. Manchester City has not been at their best shape ahead of the Derby match on Sunday. City has suffered a 1-3 defeat to Arsenal recently. Manchester City defeated their arch rivals at their home stadium in the first half of the season. So, Manchester United will also seek revenge of their defeat this season.

Manchester United has commemorated the 50th anniversary of Munich air tragedy that killed 23 people including eight Manchester United players on 6 February 1958 when the team was on their way home after defeating Red Star Belgrade in the quarter final of the European Cup. The disaster happened when the flight 609, after refueling, attempted to take off for the third time on the snow-covered airport of Munich. There were eight players, eight journalists, three members of Manchester United's staff, two air crews, a travel agent and a close friend of Sir Matt Busby among the 23 victims of the accident.

Manchester United will show honor to the victims of the disaster with a minute of silence before the match kicks off. Manchester United players will be wearing an old-fashioned jersey that the then Manchester United players used to wear. The Jerseys will not have the names of the sponsors.

International Herald Tribune reported:

Fans will be thinking more of earning bragging rights over their city rivals and providing an occasion suitable to mark the memory of the crash's 23 victims, who included eight United players and a former City goalkeeper.

Four days after thousands gathered at Old Trafford for a memorial service to mark the actual Feb. 6 anniversary, the teams will line up at the same stadium in old-fashioned jerseys devoid of sponsors' names and honor a minute's silence before the match.

Manchester United Captain Garry Neville is eagerly waiting to wear one of those commemorative shirts on the day. He has been out of action for last 10 months with injury. However, the defender wants to lead his club in the match against City wearing one of those shirts. He also wants to win the match against Manchester United.

The Electric New Paper reported:

'To wear one of those shirts would be so special. Every single player is desperate to play every single week but this Sunday, each player will be absolutely desperate to play and to go out there - a Manchester derby, the occasion, the shirt.

'It will be a special shirt and something you can look back upon and think 'wow, I was part of that day'.

'That's why we cannot on that day let the fans down, we cannot let the club down, we cannot let the memory of the Busby Babes down.

'It will be a really emotional day but we have to play the football match and we have to win.

Well, as far as the title race is concerned, Manchester United can hardly afford to drop any points. The three-way race has been very close as the third placed Chelsea is just four points behind Manchester United. So, any more slip up will cost Manchester United a lot in their pursuit to defend the title. However, this is not the case of Manchester City. They have already been out of the title race with 41 points. However, they are just four points behind the fourth placed Everton in the table. So, they have a good chance to ensure a place in the European competition.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed his hope that his team will learn from the match against Arsenal and admitted that Manchester City has not been at their best in the last few matches. Manchester City will miss out some of their key players including Micah Richards, Richard Dunne, Vedran Corluka, Martin Petrov, Gelson Fernandes, Sun Jihai, Joe Hart, Andreas Isaksson and Kasper Schmeichel as they will be away on international duties. So, it has been a major concern for Manchester City manager.

However, City has signed some effective singings. Felipe Caicedo from Ecuador has joined Manchester City from Basel recently, while Zimbabwean striker Benjani Mwaruwari has signed on a loan deal from Portsmouth. Benjani Mwaruwari has been in impressive form with 12 goals so far. Both of them are available for the Derby match. This would be their debut match for Manchester City. However, Eriksson said that Felipe Caicedo would go through fitness test before he is given a chance in the squad.

Fox Sports reported:

"Felipe now has a visa and will train today and we will see what condition he is in physically," Eriksson told the Manchester Evening News.

"He has been playing only friendly games for Basel after they completed their winter break so he may not be quite up to speed yet.

"I will not rule him in or out at this stage.

Benjani is more likely to feature in the match as there are many key players absent in the match. It would be interesting to see if Benjani continue his impressive run from the beginning with Manchester City. He is now the third highest goal score of the season. So, Manchester City will have some lofty expectations from this 29-year-old striker.
