Manchester United Shocked by City Defeat

Manchester United suffered a shocking home defeat to the city rivals Manchester City yesterday. With the 1-2 defeat, Manchester United lost the chance to climb over Arsenal at the top of the league point table. United is now two points behind the Gunners, which could be five if Arsenal can pick up three points against Blackburn Rovers today.

The match started following a minute of silence observed as part of their commemoration of the victims of Munich air disaster, which killed 23 people including eight Manchester United players. However, Manchester United players failed to keep their word to reel off a victory to be dedicated for the victims of the accident.

Manchester City got both the goals in the first half before Michael Carrick decreased the difference for Manchester United in the 90th minute. Darius Vassell opened scoring for Manchester City in the 24th minute. City doubled their lead with a goal from Benjani Mwaruwari minutes before the half time.

Bankok post reported:

Edwin van der Sar made two good saves to stop the former England striker but Vassell slotted the ball home at the third time of asking.
United continued to press but City defended stoutly and doubled their lead right on half-time when Benjani got the slightest of flick-headers to a cross from Martin Petrov.
Carlos Tevez thought he had pulled one back for United but his goal was ruled out for off-side early in the second half.

It was undoubtedly a big shock for the Red Devils considering the vital situation of English premier league. After a long time, Manchester City has won a derby match at the home ground of Manchester United. With this defeat Manchester United has made Arsenal’s lead in the league point table confirmed for al least another week. The defending champions might be cleared of five points tonight. Manchester City came back following a disastrous performance against Arsenal last week. So, it will, for sure, boost up the confidence level of their players in their pursuit to win a European place in the league.
