San Francisco Marathon 2010: Detailed Information

San Francisco Marathon 2010 is going to take place on 25 July 2010 in San Francisco, California. This is the 32nd edition of San Francisco Marathon since its inception in 1977 when a taxi driver, Athol Barton, won the 26.2 mile-race.

This year San Francisco Marathon is going to see a record 24,000 participants in this event, 3000 more than the previous year. The marathon event includes 4 races: one full marathon (26.2 miles), two half marathons (each around 13.1 miles) and a 5K (5 kilometers or around 3.1 miles).

The full marathon kicks off at 5:30 am, while the two half marathons starts at 6:32 am and 7:45 am respectively. The 5K race begins at 7:45 am. One of the biggest attractions of San Francisco Marathon is its course that runs through many historic landmarks including Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Aquatic Park, Golden Gate Park and AT&T Park.

All the races would be taken place on the same course with the half marathons and 5K having early finishes. The full marathon starts and ends on the Embarcadero.

Except 1988, San Francisco marathon has been being taken place every year since 1977. This marathon event now acts as a qualifier for the Boston marathon. United States is the most successful country for having 43 champions including 17 male and 26 female.

Kenya’s Simon Kigen holds the record timing among the male as he finished the full marathon with a timing of 2:10:18 in 1984. Among the females, Lesley Ann Lehane and Carol Young are the joint record holders for finishing the marathon with a timing of 2:35:33.
