Manchester United, Chelsea Won Champions League Openers

Two English giants Manchester United and Chelsea won their respective champions league group stage matches on Tuesday. Manchester United faced Turkish champions Besiktas in Turkey, but faced a huge challenge from the home side to clinch a 1-0 narrow victory.

United faced a hostile environment at the Besiktas home-ground due to the passionate home crowd who were chanting club songs and screaming all the time. The Red Devils started pretty well, but Besiktas came soon after the initial United threats. Besiktas got a number of good chances, but United defense was up to the mark. Scholes then braced an excellent header in the 77th minutes. After that Besiktas tried hard to get an equalizer, but United appeared winner in the end.

In another Champions league match, Chelsea hosted FC Porto. The Blues also clinched a 1-0 victory, but it could have increased by 1 or 2 more goals, if Lampard and Anelka did not miss a number of scoring chances. Moreover, the credit should also go to Porto goalkeeper Helton who made a number of good saves. Chelsea’s win came through an excellent goal from Anelka in the 48th minutes. Today, two more English clubs- Arsenal and Liverpool- will their first Champion League match.
