Live Updates: Wigan Athletic vs Manchester United

Following a shocking away defeat at the hands of newly promoted Burnley last Wednesday, English champion Manchester United is now gearing up for a strong come back against Wigan Athletic in their next premier league match on 22 August 2009. No doubt, the 1-0 defeat away from home came as a big shock for the Red Devils who were looking to prove that their performance was not affected by the departure of their former star Cristiano Ronaldo. In fact, they started off well with a 1-0 home victory over Birmingham City in the opening match, but Ferguson boys failed in the second game of the season, giving more ground to their critics who believe Ronaldo’s departure would cost United the premier league title this season.

Match: Wigan Athletic vs Manchester United; English Premier League 2009-10

Date: 22 August 2009, Saturday

Venue: DW Stadium, England

Kick off: 15:00 BST (British Summer Time)

Like Manchester United, Wigan Athletic suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton last Tuesday. Wigan also had a very good start to the season as they outperformed Aston Villa 2-0 in their opening game of the season. It would not be easy for Wigan to bounce back against mighty Manchester United, coming off a home defeat. The only thing that would ease the situation for Wigan is the news of a series of injury concerns in the Old Trafford camp.

Yes, the current form of the side is the not the only worry for manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Injury must have kept a bigger part of his worry ahead of the game. Specially, the injury concern has been aggravated in their defense as the side is currently missing the services of regular centre backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as well as regular goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar. Manchester United players were also responsible for Robbie Blake’s excellent goal, which clinched a memorable victory for Burnley. It is pretty much certain that United would not get their three most reliable defensemen back for the upcoming away fixture against Wigan Athletic. So, Ferguson would find it difficult to line up his defense against Wigan, regardless of the strength of the opposition.

Manchester United fans might find some optimism in the fact that the Red Devils always start the season poorly, but make a strong come back by the turn of October and win the title. In fact, Ferguson boys could win only one of their opening four games in their last two premier league seasons, but still they emerged winner in the end. Ferguson also admitted the fact, but that does not mean that United would like to continue losing games until October. Ferguson does not think that United’s performance in the loss against Burnley was too much bad.

New York Times reported:

Ferguson took a philosophical view of United's first defeat to a newly-promoted side for four years -- a run of 17 straight wins -- after Robbie Blake's stunning volley gave Burnley victory in their first top flight match for 33 years at Turf Moor.

"It is a bad blow to us. I know everyone will say we are never good at the start of the season, we usually take our time and by October we start to get going, but nonetheless we shouldn't be losing these games."

Here, I am quoting some facts about this match from Eurosport:

Wigan have taken the lead in three of their four Premier League home games against Man Utd, but gone on to lose the match they failed to score in the other game.

Manchester United is definitely favorite against Wigan Athletic, but still you can not deny the fact that United has not got its rhythm back this season. Moreover, the squad has not got used to play without Ronaldo because the Portuguese had so much influence on United’s performance over the last few seasons that it would take some time to make the combination right. Wigan, knowing that they are underdog against United, might come up with some inspirational football in front of home crowd in what could cause an upset.

1 comment:

  1. Wigan is terrible weak when visit. They used been defeated by Tottenham 9-1, Portsmouth 4-0 and Arsenal 4-0. The facts say everything and of course a comfy win to Red Devil.
