England Press Praises Sachin Tendulkar for his Excellent Knock in Chennai Test

(This entry was originally published in this blog December 2008 and it is based on the information of that time.)

English press is always merciless when it comes to criticizing English players and teams. However, English press acted differently, despite England’s defeat in Chennai test against India. English dailies and tabloids did not come down hard on the English players this time. Rather, some newspapers praised Sachin Tendulkar, the centurion of India’s second innings who along with Yuvraj Singh ensured India’s 6-wicket victory, for his excellent winning knock.

AFP reported:

England, who had sensed victory in this emotionally charged Test, ultimately bowed to Tendulkar’s unyielding determination to sooth a nation’s pain,” wrote one commentator in the Guardian.

He added: “Once their disappointment has diminished, England should reflect with satisfaction on the part they played in one of the most politically significant Tests in history.”

The Daily Mail’s correspondent agreed, saying that through his “utterly brilliant, match-winning and history-making century”, Tendulkar had achieved something that was “far, far bigger than cricket”.

“It simply does not matter that England had lost a Test they should have won,” he wrote.

No doubt, England team made a brave move by deciding to resume their tour of India and there are many who hats off to them for this move. Moreover, England team played better in the test match than what they showed in the ODI series which they lost by 5-0. With 1-0 down in the series, England now has to win the second and the final match of the series in Mohali to avoid series defeat.
