India vs Ireland Live Updates: 10 June 2009

India and Ireland are going to face each other in a seemingly insignificant match of Group A on 10 June 2009 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Well, still the match has lots of significance, despite the fact that both India and Ireland are already through to the super eight of twenty20 world cup 2009. However, still both sides would like to win the game because they know it very well that they can carry the points achieved in this game in the super eight round.

Match: India vs Ireland; Group A; ICC World Twenty20 2009

Date: 10 June 2009

Venue: Trent Bridge, Nottingham, England

Kick off: 16:30 GMT (Local 17:30)

Both India and Ireland have defeated Bangladesh in their respective first match and have ensured their place in the super eight. No doubt, Ireland is now full of confidence after defeating Bangladesh causing another upset in the tournament. However, the Irish side will definitely try their best to cause their upset against India. Causing upset is nothing new for the Irish who earlier defeated Pakistan in 2007 world cup in West Indies that eventually led Pakistan to get eliminated from the preliminary round.

Another victory over a test playing nation would only boost up cricket in the country where cricket is not yet a popular game, though cricket is getting more and more popularity in the recent years.

AFP reported:

For the growing number of cricket fans in the Irish Republic it was confirmation of the form their side had demonstrated at the World Cup in the Caribbean two years ago.

With its international successes, cricket in Ireland is getting a profile that it has not had for more than a century.

India has faced some challenge from Bangladesh, but still managed to win the game thanks to excellent bowling from the spinners and Yuvraj Singh’s fiery batting performance. However, India has now lost their fiery opener Virender Sehwag due to injury and has sent back home already. So, Rohit Sharma would continue his job in the opening slot along with Gautam Gambhir. Sharma has been pretty much excellent so far in the opening slot, so it should not be a very big problem for team India to deal with.

However, I do not think that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should bat in the no. 3 position. The no. 3 position should be given to someone like Suresh Raina or Yuvraj Singh who are very much solid in terms of technique and have plenty of shot in their hands. Dhoni should come after Raina and Yuvraj. Though the match has not lost its significance, I think, India could give a chance to Ravindra Jadeja against Ireland in place of Irfan Pathan. Indian team management could also bring in RP Singh in place of Irfan. Overall, I think, you could see one or two changes in India’s final eleven tomorrow. I do not think that India would bring any change in their attack following Pragyan Ojha excellent performance against Bangladesh. That India is most likely to include both Harbhajan Singh and Ojha in the first eleven.

Ireland, I think, is less likely to make any change in their winning combination. They will start as underdog against India, but it does not mean that India any scope of taking Ireland lightly. Ireland has a number of excellent players in Niall O'Brien, Kevin O'Brien, William Porterfield who are key members in their batting line up. Irish side also has an excellent all rounder in Trent Johnston. Off spinner Kyle McCallan and pacer Boyd Rankin could also be vital for Ireland.

There is no doubt, India is favorite against Ireland, but as I said earlier, team India can not sit back and relax considering Ireland as a mere underdog. Ireland has already shown the kind of ability they have and the kind of upsets they could cause. So, India should remain alert and should not feel any kind of complacency. Ireland will also be looking to cause another upset against India in what would give them a huge boost in their bid to reach the semi final.
