Twenty20 format has become the latest craze in world cricket. IPL and ICL have already become successful in India, and APL is on its way to seek new market for cricket in America. Now, Southern Premier League (SPL) seems to the latest production of twenty20 format.
The cricket boards of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa are now planning to set up a twenty20 league competition, incorporating teams from these three countries. Justin Vaughan, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket, has said that the tournament format will be similar to IPL, featuring franchises which would be up for sale. However, Mr. Vaughan said that finding space in the schedule would be a big challenge.
With so many twenty20 leagues are getting formed, it seems that time will come when twenty20 league competitions could take the centre stage of world cricket alike football (soccer). This is definitely a threat for test and ODI cricket.
