Just a week after Chelsea’s unbeaten streak was stopped by Liverpool, Liverpool also experienced their undefeated run in the premier league being ended last night as the All Reds were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on the road. With this defeat, Liverpool dropped to the no. 2 position in the premier league table with 23 points from 11 matches. Chelsea’s 5-0 victory over Sunderland equaled them with Liverpool in terms of points, but the Blues are leading the table on better goal difference.
For Tottenham Hotspur, it was a confidence booster performance and there is no doubt, this victory would provide enough courage and inspiration for the spurs to rebound from their poor runs in the league. Though Tottenham got off to perhaps the worst start to premier league ever this season, they are now firmly on course to come back from the relegation zone. Since the arrival of new manager Harry Redknapp, Tottenham Hotspur picked up 7 points from three matches with two wins and a morale booster draw against Arsenal.
Dirk Kuyt’s early strike after three minutes into the game brought a much-needed lead for Liverpool. Liverpool lost a number of opportunities to double their lead and hit the goal bar three times before conceding an own goal by Jamie Carragher in the 70th minute and Roman Pavlyuchenko’s last-gasp winner in the 90th minute in the match. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said that his side was unlucky not to win the match because he believed it could have been 4-0 in their favor. For Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham Hotspur manager could not have asked for a better start to his new managerial job at White Hart Lane.
Chelsea’s high-flying form was not affected by the home defeat to Liverpool as they thrashed Sunderland 5-0 last night. Now, let us see if Liverpool can stick to their excellent form after their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last night. Liverpool has Champions League match this week before they face West Bromwich Albion on November 8, 2008 in their next premier league match.
