Marcello Lippi Feels Lionel Messi Should be Awarded Ballon d'Or

The list of players nominated for this year’s Ballon d'Or, the award given to the European Footballer of the Year, has been announced recently including 30 players from several European clubs. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Liverpool’s Fernando Torres and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi are considered to be most favorites for this year’s Ballon d'Or. The winner of the award will be announced in December.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi also admitted that Ronaldo, Messi and Torres are favorites for the award, but Lippi thinks Messi should be awarded the award.

Soccernet.ESPN reported:

Lippi said: "For me the candidates for the Ballon D'or are just three: Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres and Messi. They could have done without the rest.

"As for who is the best in the world, in my opinion it's Leo Messi."

Messi is one of the most popular footballers of present time and is considered to be the game’s future legend. He currently plays for Barcelona. Though Barcelona did not win any title last season and their performance was not impressive, Messi was vivid with his talent and skill. The Argentine international missed a number of matches last season through injury, but still he was instrumental behind Barcelona’s success. On the other hand, Ronaldo also had a great season with scoring highest number of goals both in premier league as well as in Champions League. Fernando Torres also spent his first season in premier league with lots of success, becoming Liverpool’s highest scorer last season. So, it will be tough competition between the three for the Ballon d'Or award of 2008.
