Manchester United’s Dismal Start in Champions League Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s Return

Cristiano Ronaldo’s fist appearance this season could not help Manchester United to come out of their current bad-patch as they got off to a dismal start in their title defense of Champion League against Spanish club Villarreal at Old Trafford. Manchester United only managed to pick up only one point from the match as they were held to a goalless draw by Villarreal.

The most important thing is that Manchester United failed to win the match despite playing in front of the home crowd last night against Villarreal. The Red Devils are the defending champion in both Premier League and Champions League this season, but they got a poor start in both the tournaments this season. In Premier League, Manchester United recently lost to Liverpool at Anfield and could collect only 4 points from three matches in the league so far this season. With this draw, Manchester United’s 12-match winning streak in Champions League has been stalled.

Sir Alex Ferguson said in his post match interview that he would have been happier with three points from the match, but still he thinks, the draw against Villarreal was not United’s worst performance. United has a great chance to become the only first team since 1990 when AC Milan could successfully hold the Champions League title for the second consecutive year. The manager thinks, United is currently short of a bit of sharpness. Ferguson featured a strong attacking line up against Villarreal in the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.

Now, Manchester United has only few days left at hand to get their from back before they meet Chelsea in a high profile premier league match at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.
