Patty Schnyder in French Open 2008

When Swiss star Roger Federer has been dominating men’s tennis for the last four years now, his fellow countrywomen Patty Schnyder could not have that much dominance in women’s tennis. Patty Schnyder is currently ranked no. 10, being the only Swiss in the top ten. Patty Schnyder is yet to reach her first grand slam final in her underachieved career. In fact, the Swiss star could reach any grand slam semi final only once, when she made it to the semi final of Australian Open 2004. Since then, she could not even reach any more grand slam semi final. So, you may be surprised to know that how the 29 year old Patty Schnyder could hold on her place in the top ten. That was mostly because of herk excellent performance in WTA tours.

The best French Open performance of Patty Schnyder came 10 years ago in 1998 when she reached the quarter final in Roland Garros. Out of her 10 career tour titles, Patty Schnyder won three titles in clay court. So, you can not say that she is not good in clay-court. Being 10th in world ranking means any more ordinary performance would leave her out of top ten at the end of French Open 2008. In Bangalore Open, the latest tour competition she participated, Patty Schnyder became runner up, being defeated to the eventual champion Serena Williams 5–7 3–6. Patty Schnyder finished the year 2007 16th in WTA ranking. However, thanks to her impressive performance so far in 2008, she could come back in the top ten of the ranking.

Well, to be honest, I am not that much optimistic about her success in French Open 2008. In fact, she does not have anything special in her career to take inspiration from, but what she has is self confidence and the ability to perform continuously. Actually, she has been playing in the quarter finals and third rounds pretty consistently in the tournaments, but now she needs to know how to go beyond that stage regularly in the bigger tournaments in order to have a successful career in the end. I hope, she would achieve this quality soon and she appears with this quality in French Open 2008 tournament.
