Anna Chakvetadze started her professional tennis career in 2003, but she is yet to flourish her full potential at the grand slam tournaments. In fact, the Russian tennis star marked her best performances in four grand slam titles last year, reaching quarter final of both Australian Open 2007 and French Open 2007, third round of Wimbledon 2007 and played in her first grand slam semi final in US Open 2007. She finished the year 6th in the WTA ranking.
Well, her performance is not something special so far in 2008. Chakvetadze reached the third round of Australian Open 2008, before losing to Maria Kirilenko 6–7(6), 6–1, 6–2. However, the 21 year old starlet won her first tour title of this year at Paris defeating Amelie Mauresmo in the quarter final, Marion Bartoli in the semifinals and Agnes Szavay in the final to clinch her seventh career tour singles title. However, in her latest tour tournament, Sony Ericsson Open, she could not go beyond third round being defeated to Sabine Lisicki.
Well, I am sure that the pundits are not that much optimistic about Anna Chakvetadze’s success in French Open 2008, due to start from 25 May 2008. However, I think, following the retirement of Justine Henin from WTA tour, French Open 2008 now seems to be open to all. Moreover, Anna Chakvetadze has immense talent in her who could have a successful career in tennis and I would not be surprised if the Russian at least reach the final of French Open 2008 tournament.
