Mumbai Indians vs Bangalore Royal Challengers: Harbhajan Singh Preparing to Lead Mumbai

Yes, that is true. Ace off spinner Harbhajan Singh is now gearing up to take on Bangalore Royal Challengers tonight at the Wankhede Stadium of Mumbai. However, he can be seen coming to toss along with opposition captain and his former Indian team captain Rahul Dravid in the match. Sachin Tendulkar, regular captain of Mumbai Indians, is not yet confirmed for the match because he is yet to get back his match fitness. Sachin Tendulkar said that he would wait till team physio Nitin Patel makes the final report on his groin injury.

India’s star batsman is the icon player and is perhaps one of the reliable batsmen of Mumbai side. So, in the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, off spinner Harbhajan Singh will lead Mumbai team. As far as I am concerned, Harbhajan Singh does not have any captaincy experience in international cricket, though I am not sure if he captained any side in domestic cricket in India.

Mumbai Indians has two internationally successful and experienced captains: Sanath Jayasuria and Shaun Pollock. Sachin Tendulkar said that Harbhajan Singh can take help from Pollock and Jayasuria while leading Mumbai Indians.

Hindu reported:

Twenty20 cricket demands split-second decisions and the Indian off-spinner may not have the necessary experience. The presence of coach Lalchand Rajput, along with former international team captains Pollock and Jayasuriya in the Mumbai Indians camp means the onfield skipper has adequate backup. “The captain has to take the final call, but we are open to ideas,” said Tendulkar. “Even if Harbhajan becomes captain.

Sanath Jayasuria and Shaun Pollock both have much more experience than that of Harbhajan Singh. No doubt, Harbhajan Singh is a talented cricketer and has a lot to offer for his side, but considering the international experience of Jayasuria and Pollock, I think, either of them should have been given the captaincy of Mumbai Indians. Specially, I prefer Sanath Jayasuria to Shaun Pollock because Jayasuria has been used to playing in sub continent for a long time and he could well become the captain of Mumbai Indians. However, I think, both Pollock and Jayasuria would like to share their experience with Harbhajan Singh.
