Chelsea Likely to Go through a Huge Change in the Squad in Summer Transfer Window

Chelsea is going to see off a number of players in the summer transfer window. Club owner, Roman Abramovich, is expected to spend about £100 million to recruit new players for the next season. Though nothing is confirmed yet, it is likely that the Russian would go for all out change in the squad in which a number of key players could leave the club.

Chelsea could not win any of the FA Cup and Carling Cup trophies this season after losing to comparatively weaker sides like Barnsley and Tottenham Hotspur. The players who are likely to be axed out are Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Carlo Cudicini, Florent Malouda, Claude Makelele, Steve Sidwell etc.

Telegraph reported:

Drogba, who has looked stilted since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, is a £20 million target for AC Milan while Barcelona have expressed interest in Lampard, with the possibility of both players joining the Catalan side.

Chelsea’s performance was not that much impressive so far this season. It is true. What is more, the way they played could not entertain the fans. No doubt, the club missed a number of key players for a long stint due to injury. However, I think, the departure of manager Jose Mourinho halfway the season was instrumental behind their lackluster performance during the season. Avram Grant should not be blamed for this. It is not possible for a manager to take a team to their prominence within few months. Rather, he should be given at least another season to work out the problems and build a base of the squad.
