Sania Mirza Reaches Second Round of Australian Open 2008

Sania Mirza has powered into the second round of Australian Open 2008 with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 victory over Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan in the first round. Tournament’s 31st seed took only one hour and nine minutes to clinch the victory. Sania Mirza dominated throughout the match. Sania Mirza spent a big part of last year out of the court with injury. So, her fans were eager to see Mirza in good form and she could live up to the expectation in the opening match of the first grand slam of the year.

NDTV reported:

Sania had 21 winners to her opponent's 15, but what made the difference in the end were the 11 double-faults by Tulyaganova.
Sania will face an unseeded opponent in the second round, but could potentially meet 8th-seed Venus Williams in the third round.

Sania Mirza will face Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky in the second round. So, if Sania can continue her prime form then Timea Bacsinszky may not be a big challenge for her. However, in the third round, Sania Mirza might face 8th seed Venus Williams. It is really hard for even a die hard fan to become optimistic about her chance against Venus Williams. However, Sania needs to focus on her second round match now. I think, reaching the third round of Australian Open 2008 would be a satisfactory performance for Sania Mirza.
