After the inspirational victory over Barcelona in the last match of La Liga, Real Madrid is going to host Real Zaragoza on 6 January 2007 as la liga resumes from 5 January. Real Madrid now leading the league point table with 41 points and has been impressive half the season. They are ahead of second placed Barcelona by 7 points and still remain in safe position. The match will take place at the Real Madrid home ground Santiago Bernabéu.

On the other hand, Real Zaragoza is now in the ninth place in the league table with only 21 points and they failed to show enough consistency so far. They finished with a 2-2 draw against Valencia in the last league match. Now, ahead of the match away, they will look for something special against the leader Real Madrid. So, Real Zaragoza must try their best to bounce back from this stage and come back with some impressive performances in the first match of this year. They can not afford any more humiliation at this stage of the league. However, Real Madrid will not be happy to start the new year with losing points to Real Zaragoza despite the fact that even a defeat will not see them down in the standings.

Earth Times reported:

That crucial win in the Camp Nou leaves the whites seven points clear of Barca at the top of La Liga - and well placed to claim their 31st league title.

On Wednesday the Real reserves beat third division Alicante 2-1 in the King's Cup.

The likes of Iker Casillas, Raul Gonzalez and Ruud Van Nistelrooy, however, will kick off 2008 on Sunday, at home to troubled Zaragoza.

Despite spending heavily in the summer, Zaragoza are ninth and leaking goals alarmingly. A heavy defeat in the Bernabeu could be the final nail in the coffin of embattled coach Victor Fernandez.

Real Madrid has got a nail biting victory over the second division B side Alicante on Wednesday and progressed to the next round of Copa del Rey. Guti’s injury time goal has saved Real Madrid from a humiliating extra time. No doubt, Real Madrid was not in good form against Alicante. However, manager Bernd Schuster has said that he was not doubtful for his side’s victory. Giving some credit to the goal keeper of Alicante, he has also said that the way Real Madrid won the match was not necessary.

Sportinglife reported:

"I was full of confidence that my team were going to win. It was not necessary to do it in this way, waiting until the last minute, but their goalkeeper has played superbly in both games," he said.

"The players are trying to make life as complicated as possible for me, and this is good," he added.

"I am happy, the players have returned well and have taken advantage of this game to do things well and obtain a victory which is much-welcomed ahead of Sunday's match against Zaragoza.

Bernd Schuster thinks that winning is the main thing. It does not matter how it came. Well, this is exactly the result oriented comment. However, Real Madrid needs to play much better if they really want to defend the title of Spanish La Liga this season. Real Madrid has bad news ahead of the clash with Real Zaragoza on Sunday. Defender Pepe is not yet confirmed for the Real Zaragoza match as he is now suffering from a muscle strain. Argentine international Gabriel Heinze is considered as possible replacement for Pepe. Real Madrid will also miss their injured defender Christoph Metzelder against Real Zaragoza as well. Gabriel Heinze has just recovered from his injury and expected to be fit totally by the kick off the match.

Goal.com reported:

Problems arise in defence due to the continued absence of Christoph Metzelder, who would normally be considered an able deputy for the Portuguese player. Thus, it may be Gabriel Heinze - himself on the mend after injury - who steps in at centre-back.

Despite his knock, the Argentine completed a practice match in front of 500 fans at Valdebebas on Thursday, and as such he's expected to fully recover in time for Sunday's match.

However, Real Madrid’s front line looks very strong with captain Raúl and Ruud van Nistelrooy have played excellent so far this season. Brazilian Júlio Baptista has been in the last few matches and expected to come in the starting line up against Real Zaragoza. Robinho is also there to strengthen the forward line up of Real Madrid.

Real Zaragoza needs to perform consistently. The side is balanced enough to cause upset against any giant. Forward Ricardo Oliveira and Diego Milito will try to break down the Real Madrid defense. In the defense, they have experienced Roberto Ayala whereas in the midfield Pablo Aimar and Andrés d'Alessandro are enough to resist any side in their days.
