Chelsea is going to travel to Goodison Park on Wednesday to face Everton in the second leg match of Carling Cup 2007-2008 semi final. With a 2-1 victory in the first leg at home, Chelsea now has an edge over their opponent Everton ahead of the upcoming second leg match. The victory of Chelsea has left Everton with the only option to overturn the 2-1 deficit in the match in order to play the final.

Chelsea has not been in their great form throughout the season. The side suffered from injury woes as most of their star players got through some tough time with injuries. At this moment, eight of their first team players are out of first team contention either for being injured or on international duty with national teams.

John Terry, Frank Lampard, Andriy Shevchenko are all injured. Though Terry has just recovered from his foot injury, he is yet to get his match fitness back. Moreover, Chelsea is also missing their African stars like Mikel John Obi, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba as they are away on international duty to take part in African Nations Cup. The latest injury woe is Shaun Wright-Phillips who picked up ankle ligament damage during their 1-0 victory over Birmingham City last Saturday.

Daily Mail reported:

Shaun Wright-Phillips is the latest to join the injury list with suspected ankle ligament damage. It was being assessed today but it is expected to keep him out for several weeks.

Frank Lampard will not have recovered from his thigh problem in time after another setback and Joe Cole is playing on with a minor muscle injury.

Andriy Shevchenko's comeback date is still unclear after suffering his second back injury of the season and John Terry has only just started running outside as he recovers from a broken foot.

Well, I hardly find any more team with such a spate of injury woe in English premier league this season. Naturally, it should have been problematic for Chelsea to win matches when they are missing eight of their first team players. However, it is really a matter of surprise that they are somehow achieving three points from the matches regularly.

Though their performance has not been that much impressive, they are picking up maximum points from the matches, which kept Chelsea alive in the title race along with Arsenal and Manchester Untied. Chelsea has noting to complain about manager Avram Grant, who took over from José Mourinho during the season. Grant is also happy with the performance of his side, despite those injury problems.

Guardian reported:

It was their fourth in succession in the league and no other club has taken maximum points over the same period; it also prevents Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger from getting too preoccupied with each other as the Premier League title race moves towards its crucial stage. "It gives everyone at the club big satisfaction to see these players getting results," said Grant. "It's not easy. But we are still in the race. When we were six points behind we said we wouldn't give up and now it's four points we won't give up."

Chelsea won five out of their last six league matches with the draw in the other. They are now in third place of the league point table with 50 points to their credit, just four behind top two clubs- Manchester United and Arsenal. Now, on the other hand, Everton is also in their prime form so far this season occupying the fourth place in the standing with 42 points.

It is now a realistic goal for the Blues to qualify for the UEFA Champions league qualifying round next season. Now, ahead of the semi final match against Chelsea, Everton must have to overturn their 2-1 first leg deficit in the home match in order to be at the Wembley stadium in the final. Everton projected another victory in their last league match against Wigan Athletic. So, it seems that they are in the right shape before they take on Chelsea on Wednesday.

Owner Bill Kenwright is also upbeat for the home match and has expressed his wish that if Everton can reach the final then it would be the biggest thing in his life. So, it is almost clear that Everton is gunning up to do their best against Chelsea to make it to the final of Carling Cup.

Liverpool Daily Post reported:

Looking ahead to the Carling Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Wednesday – when attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit, the 62 years-old said: “If we beat Chelsea and get to the Carling Cup final at Wembley, it will be the biggest thing ever in my life. Bigger than any award, bigger than any first night.

“If I am sitting in that box at Wembley on February 24, my heart will be bursting out of my chest. I am scared stiff just thinking about it.”

Everton has some quality players who can lead the Blues against Chelsea and much of their success depend on the performance of some of their key players. Leon Osma, Andrew Johnson, Joleon Lescott and Tony Hibbert can be vital for Everton against Chelsea. The main advantage of Everton would be their home condition.

It is really very tough to predict regarding the result of the match beforehand. I think, both Everton and Chelsea have equal chance to win the match. However, overturning from 2-1 deficit would not be that much easy for Everton, despite the fact that Everton will have home advantage counted in the match. So far, I think, Chelsea has better chance at this moment.
