David Nalbandian is the men’s world no. 10. He carries a big part of Argentines’ hopes in the Australian Open 2008 tournament. He is the only player from
However, the Argentine is suffering from a muscle injury and he withdrew from the Kooyong Classic on the eve of Australian Open 2008. According to Nalbandian, he requires four days to become fit. So, his preparation for the Australian Open has been disrupted.
IOL reported:
"The doctor told me it was a distension of the muscle," said Nalbandian, who was to have faced Fernando Gonzalez in his Kooyong start. He was replaced in the eight-man draw by 2007 Australian Open junior champion Brydan Klein.
"I need to rest, take treatment and we'll see how it goes," said Nalbandian, "It came up after about 30 minutes of training. I tried to finish, Marat and I were playing points. But I had to stop.
"For sure I can't play, I can't even hit slowly. It's better to rest and recover the muscle. We have to wait and see."
This is not good news for the fans of Nalbandian. However, I hope, he recovers from the injury on due time and takes part in the competition. Nalbandian may not have any problem to reach the fourth round, where he might face David Ferrer. In the quarter final, Novak Djokovic or Lleyton Hewitt or Marcos Baghdatis or Marat Safin could be his most probable opponent. If he can survive in the quarter final and reach the semi final then Roger Federer could be his last hurdle before final. David Nalbandian could not reach the final of Australian Open. His best Australian Open success came in 2006, when he made it to the semi final. To be honest, I can not be that much optimistic to say that he will play his second grand slam final in Australian Open 2008. Reaching the semi final will be a satisfactory performance for Nalbandian. However, his fans should pray for his quick recovery from injury.
