Manchester City Gets Historic Victory against Manchester United

Yes, I want to term it as a historic win for Manchester City against Manchester United. This is perhaps the best beginning for Manchester City in Premiership. City 3 out of 3 and they have beaten their biggest rival and neighbor Manchester United. Manchester United is the reigning champion of EPL. Manchester United did not play badly in the match but they missed a quality striker. On the Manchester City players are becoming more and more confident. They were not afraid of Manchester United and they played with calm and confident attitude. They were not afraid to challenge ManU players.

I went through the media reports of the match and I am giving a glimpse of what the major news websites have stated about the match in the lat few hours.

Sven-Goran Eriksson emerged victorious from his showdown with Alex Ferguson as City claimed Manchester bragging rights at Eastlands and maintained their 100% start to the season.

Geovanni’s 31st-minute strike ultimately proved decisive but City were indebted to a towering performance from teenage defender Micah Richards who stood firm amid wave after wave of United attacks.

NZ Herald wrote:

It is United's worst start to a Premier League season since 1992 when they managed just one point from their opening three matches. It is also the worst start by any defending champions.

An untidy Manchester derby at Eastlands was settled after 31 minutes by Geovanni, one of the numerous foreign signings made by former England boss Eriksson since taking charge last month.

USA Today reported:

A clearly happy and somewhat relieved City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson paid tribute to all his players after the match, but picked out defender Micah Richards for special praise as his side maintained its 100 percent start to the league season.

"Micah was incredible. He is so strong and quick. He was probably the man of match but the whole back line and goalkeeper were fantastic for us," Eriksson said. "United could have scored and maybe they should have done but we defended very well.

"We have won and I am very happy - nine points from three games is very good."

CNN wrote:

Despite playing without the injured Wayne Rooney and suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, United controlled the first 30 minutes and nearly scored two goals before Geovanni gave City the lead.

When Carlos Tevez and Paul Scholes opened up the City defense in the fourth minute, Nani got clear but his shot was blocked at the foot of the near post by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, the son of United great Peter Schmeichel.

The City goalkeeper also saved another from Nani, and Patrice Evra was tackled as he was about to shoot with only Schmeichel to beat.

IHT reported:

City leads the league with nine points — two more than Chelsea.

Eriksson is hoping to lower expectations, refusing to set any targets until he puts the finishing touches to his squad, bankrolled by former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

"We have a long, long way to go still to be a top team, but here we are and we are fighting," Eriksson said.

Guardian wrote:

The performance may not have been vintage, but after last year's struggles under Stuart Pearce, City's fans couldn't have asked for a much more emphatic start to the Eriksson-Thaksin Shinawatra regime.

BBC wrote:

It has been a perfect start for the Blues and their new boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is yet to see his hastily-assembled side concede a goal.

That statistic seemed unlikely early on as United started like a train and, with City struggling to keep the ball let alone create anything with it, it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead.

So, you see that most of the news websites feel that Manchester United players did not play good enough and I agree with them. Manchester United surely needs an extra striker and the sooner they get it, the better. On the other hand, it is indeed a fairy tale beginning for Manchester City. They had new coach and new owner and this combination has paid off so far. I guess that Manchester City owner and management should think of the January transfer window and play some high profile players.
