ASB Tennis Classic: With or Without Marion Bartoli

To the Tennis fans, ASB Tennis Classic is not exactly a very famous tournament. However, for New Zealand fans and Tennis organizers, it is perhaps the most important event. This year, on January, Marion Bartoli won the ladies singles and in fact it was her first WTA singles title. However, that time, she was not a very famous name in international Tennis. Since then, Marion Bartoli has achieved significant progress in her career and after winning the singles title at Japan Open 2006 earlier this week, she is now the 19th ranked player in the world. This success has become a worry for the organizers of ASB Tennis Classic, if they can get Marion Bartoli for the next year’s event. TVNZ wrote:

The Frenchwoman has just won the WTA tournament in Tokyo, her second title after winning the ASB Classic in January increasing her ranking from 22 to 19.

Tournament director Richard Palmer admits she will be in greater demand ahead of the Australian Open, and says her new management company are wanting something in return for her playing in Auckland.”

I wonder what Marion Bartoli is thinking now. I should feel that she should come to Auckland. After all, this tournament gave her the first major breakthrough in International Tennis.
