John O'Shea Warned Teammates of Sunderland Threat

Manchester United center back John O'Shea thinks that his team can face a tough test away at Sunderland on Saturday. O'Shea is also aware of the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland troubled many big teams in the past.

Manchester United, currently 2nd in the league table, would be looking for full points from the fixture, while Sunderland would like to clinch at least a point against the Red Devils. Sunderland’s recent form is pretty much impressive as they held Arsenal and Liverpool in their previous two matches- meaning their confidence level is high too.

John O'Shea said, “The last few seasons they've been very tough games up there. Steve Bruce definitely enjoys the battles against the manager.”

Sunderland’s strength increased significantly since the arrival of Ghana international Asamoah Gyan in the summer. The Ghanaian could be a threat for United defense which looked shaky on a number of occasions this season. John O'Shea himself is under pressure following some sloppy performances.

“The last few seasons we've had tough games up there but we've managed to come out on top. If we under-perform it can be tough. We know the atmosphere there - if they win a throw-in or a free-kick their fans cheer as if they've scored,” O'Shea said regarding the atmosphere of the Stadium of Light.

Another worrying factor for Sir Alex Ferguson is that his side could not win full points in the away fixtures this season with a 2-2 draw away at Bolton Wanderers being the latest.

Garry Neville, John O’Shea Picked up Injury During Manchester United’s Win over Portsmouth

(This entry was originally published on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009)

Two important defenders of Manchester United- Garry Neville and John O’Shea- have been sidelined during Manchester United’s midweek victory over Portsmouth at Old Trafford. Both of them were tackled badly and picked up two injuries which would keep the out of action for a number of weeks now. No doubt, losing the two key defenders for few weeks at this crucial stage of the competition is a big setback for the defending champions. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his fury over the referee Peter Walton for not giving the tacklers their deserved punishment.

Garry Neville has been injury prone over the last one year as they Red Devils captain missed lots of action with Manchester United due to series of injury problems. Though missing Neville would be a blow for United, John O’Shea’s absence would be felt more severely. Manchester United now needs to hold on to their current three-point lead at the top of the table for few more weeks to win the premier league title. Though missing the two defenders for few weeks is a big blow, I think, it would be very crucial to their title defense because Manchester United has a big squad with a number of quality options in every position on the field.
