Japan and South Korea, the two archrivals, will play against each other in the third place play-off of Asian Cup 2007. The match will be held on 28 July 2007. It is surprising that the two Asian football powers will have to fight for the third place. Both Japan and South Korea were favorites to win the cup. However, all predictions have been proven wrong as both the teams lost in their semi final match. Along with Australia, Iran and Saudi Arabia, Japan and South Korea were also in the list of favorites.

For Japan, it was a great chance to re-experience a history in Asian Cup. Japan is the defending champion of last two Asian Cup tournaments. So, if they could win this ongoing tournament then this would be their third consecutive Asian Cup victory. In the history of Asian Cup, only Iran has such record as they won three consecutive Asian Cup tournaments in 1968, 1972 and 1976. However, in the semi final match, Japan lost to Saudi Arabia by 3-2. The match was very competitive as both the teams were strong enough to be defeated. Both Japan and Saudi Arabia play well but at the end, Saudi Arabia is ahead of Japan by one goal that was the only difference between the team in the match.

On the other hand, South Korea was clearly favorite against Iraq. However, in the match, both the teams looked similar in terms of skill and performance. In 90 minutes the match was goalless, though there were some crucial attacks from both sides. In the 30 minute extra time, the score line remained same, goalless. Then the tiebreaker stage came in to the scene and at last Iraq won the match by 4-3 in penalty shootouts. Both the teams could goal in their first three shots. However, in the fourth and fifth shot, South Korea missed whereas Iraq could score from the forth shot.

Japan started the tournament as a favorite and could qualify for the quarter final round as the B group champion. In quarter final they faced mighty Australia who could not live up to the expectation. Japan won the match through tiebreaker where they best Australia by 4-3. Iraq and Saudi Arabia are going to face each other in the final of Asian Cup 2007. The final match will be held in Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia on 29 July 2007. So, to see the champion team of Asian Cup 2007, you just need to wait some days. To be honest, before the tournament, it was unexpected that Iraq and Saudi Arabia will play in the final; rather the debutant Australia, defending champion Japan and Korea was the hot favorite to win the cup. However, the reality is different as both Iraq and Saudi Arabia have already reached in the final and now waiting to lift the trophy.

Iraq came to play in Asian Cup 2007 with a young team. The war torn country did not have any high expectation as there were some mighty participants in the tournament. From that point of view, I think, Iraq’s reaching into the final is something special for them. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is the three times winner of Asian Cup and they were in the list of favorites from the beginning of Asian Cup 2007. However, there was doubt regarding their success because most of their veteran players were out of the Asian Cup 2007 squad. Saudi Arabia started the tournament through the match against mighty South Korea and both the teams achieved 1 point through a drawn match with the score line of 1-1. Then in the second group match, Saudi Arabia faced Indonesia and won the match by 2-1. Actually, Saudi Arabia started playing like a favorite from the last group match that they won in style. They defeated Bahrain with a big margin of 4-0. Thus, Saudi Arabia qualified for the quarter final as the D Group champion. In quarter final, Saudi Arabia beat Uzbekistan by 2-1. Then in the semi final, Saudi Arabia faced Japan, defending champion of last two Asian Cup tournaments, by 3-2. For Saudi Arabia Yasser Al-Qahtani scored the first goal. This is the forth goal of Yasser Al-Qahtani in this tournament. Now, Yasser Al-Qahtani and Japan’s Naohiro Takahara are jointly top goal scorer of the tournament as both of them could score four goals.

If you go for statistics of international success of Iraq and Saudi Arabia then you will apparently see that Saudi Arabia is far ahead of Iraq. In Asian Cup, Iraq is going to play in final for the first time in the history whereas Saudi Arabia has already been one of the successful teams in the history of Asian Cup with three Asian Cup victories. Since 1994, Saudi Arabia played in all of the four World Cup tournaments. In contrast, Iraq played in World Cup once in 1986. So, you can see Iraq has little success in international tournaments.

The first semi final match of Asian Cup 2007 between Iraq and South Korea will be held on 25^th July 2007. South Korea is one of the football powers in Asia and they are one of the favorites to win the cup. However, for Iraq, it was a little surprise for them that they have reached at the semi-final round of Asian Cup 2007. They were not considered as a favorite before the tournament. Both the teams are now just two games away to lift the cup of Asian Cup 2007.

South Korea started the tournament badly and at one point they were about to get out of the tournament but at last they could survive and make it to the semi final. From the first two group matches, South Korea got only one point and that time even a die hearted fan of South Korea was in doubt about their qualifying to the next round. However, in the last group match against South Korea got a 1-0 victory over the host Indonesia and thus they qualified for quarter final round.

Earlier in the first match, South Korea drew against Saudi Arabia. Then in the second match, South Korea surprisingly lost to Bahrain by 1-2. The last group match against Indonesia then became a do or die match for South Korea. So, South Korea could not meet the expectation of the fans as they are considered as one of the strongest teams in Asia. In the quarter final, South Korea faced might Iran, the three times winner of the tournament, and South Korea won the match through penalty shoot out.

On the other hand, Iraq also started the tournament ordinarily. In the first match, they could take one point as they drew against Thailand. However, form the second match they came back in the right track and they clinched a remarkable victory against mighty Australia with a big margin of 3-1. In the last group match, they could make a goalless draw against Oman. However, Iraq qualified in the quarter final as the champion of Group A.

In quarter final, they faced B group runner up Vietnam and easily won the match by 2-0. Both the goals came from Younis Mahmoud who could yet score three goals in Asian Cup 2007. With these three goals, Younis Mahmoud is now just a goal behind Japanese striker Naohiro Takahara. Takahara is the highest goal scorer at this moment with four goals.

Iraq is a war torn country and they do not have even a good infrastructure of football in the country. It is praiseworthy that Iraq reached at the semi final despite all odds. The team has some young and energetic players. Players have lack in experience and skill. However, some of their players are potential and I guess, many of them will serve Iraq for a long period of time.

So, Asian Cup 2007 is the best ever Asian Cup for Iraq. They won four Arab Nations Cup tournaments. In 1982, Iraq won the gold medal of Asian Games.

Naohiro Takahara: Highest Scorer in Asian Cup 2007
