Gartner: iPad to Affect Laptop Market Significantly

Laptop sales decreased last year in the face of growing demand for tablet PCs in the technology world. Last year, Apple’s iPad enjoyed the ‘numero uno’ status in the tablet PC market, gaining 80 percent share. This year, the competition in the tablet market is going to be intensified with a number of companies including Motorola, HTC, HP, RIM, Asus and others coming with their own tablet devices.

According to Gartner, one of the leading tech consultancy firms, the year 2011 and 2012 will see the laptop market getting significantly hit by the soaring demand for tablets. The firm forecasts that 54 million tablets will be sold in 2011, a huge jump from last year’s sold volumes. Apple sold 15 million iPads in 2010, and the total figure of tablets sold last year would no way exceed 20 million. That means, tablet PC market is expected to get a 100 percent growth this year.

Naturally, it will have a bearing on laptop PC sales. The current demand for tablet PCs has now forced Gartner to reduce its earlier forecast of 15.9% PC growth in 2011 to 10.5%. It also thinks that annual PC growth would be below 10% in the period spanning from 2011 to 2015.
