Samsung Galaxy Tab has so far been the only tablet PC which could put up a bit of competition with Apple iPad. The South Korean company has already shipped more than 2millioni units of 7-inch Galaxy Tab which was released in September 2010.
Samsung has now unveiled two more Galaxy Tab devices with two different sizes including one featuring 10.1-inch display and the other 8.9-inch display. Except the difference in display size, the two tablets are pretty much similar in terms of features available.
Display
Both the 10.1 and 8.9-inch devices come up with a WXGA display with 1280x800 resolution. The display resolution is even better than 1024x768 resolution available in Apple iPad 2.
Processor, RAM and Storage
Both the new Samsung Galaxy Tabs are powered by dual-core 1GHz processor which is good at multi-tasking. Users would find 1GB of RAM in the two news tablets, compared to iPad 2’s 512MB of system memory. Alike iPad 2, Samsung offers three storage options: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB- with the two new Galaxy Tab devices.
Operating System
Both the devices run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system which is the only tablet-centric OS from Google’s Android platform.
Connectivity
Users will find 21 Mbps HSPA+, Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR in the upcoming Galaxy Tabs.
Camera
Two news tablets would come up with a 3 megapixel rear-facing camera, capable of capturing high definition video recording, and a 2MP camera at the front for video calling.
Battery
There is a 6800 mAh battery available in both of the Samsung Galaxy Tab devices. Users are expected to enjoy a long time back up thanks to this battery.
Micro SD Card Slot and Adobe Flash Support
Here, the upcoming Galaxy Tabs have an edge over iPad 2. Users of the two Galaxy Tabs would be able to expand memory thanks to a micro SD card slot and run Flash supported content as the two devices support Adobe Flash 10.2. Neither of the features is available in iPad 2.
Price
Smart pricing by Samsung. The 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab with 16GB storage is available for $499, the same as the price of iPad 2 16GB device. You have to shell out $599 for the 32GB storage. The 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab starts at $469 with the 32GB priced at $569.
Overall, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tabs look pretty good and it seems the two devices could even beat Apple iPad 2 in some areas. The 10.1-inch device will be launched on June 8, 2011, while the released date of 8.9-inch device is not yet revealed.
