England Number 1 David James Signed for Bristol City

In a surprise move, David James has joined Championship club Bristol City from. The 40-year-old England’s number one goalkeeper became a free agent earlier this summer as his contract with relegated Portsmouth expired at the end of the last season.

His decision of leaving Premier League would surprise many as he had suitors like Sunderland and Scottish giant Celtic. However, James is pretty much delighted to have joined Bristol City which is located in the South-West part of the country.

David James was Fabio Capello’s no. 1 choice at the World Cup in South Africa. Now, it would be interesting to see if he can hold on to his no. 1 position in England team as a Championship keeper.

David James reportedly wanted to remain at Portsmouth, but not as a player, rather as a manager. However, Portsmouth did not agree to hand him the managerial role. Later on, the two parties failed to agree on a new contract

Celtic was highly interested to secure James, while at some point, it looked he was very close to signing for Sunderland. Now, he has signed on a one-year contract with Bristol City with a weekly salary of £15,000. Reports also suggest that Bristol paid him a signing-on amount around £500,000.

Regarding his choice, James has revealed his desire of helping a club attain promotion to Premier League. He said that no club from South-West part has every played in the Premier League. So, his next goal is to help Bristol City become the first club from this region to play in the Premier League.
