Liverpool Transfer News and Rumors for January 2010 Window

The current season (2009-10) has so far been one of the worst for Liverpool in the recent past. First half of the season is over and Liverpool now occupies the 7th place in premier league table with 33 points from 20 games. The All Reds have so far lost 7 games in premier league and most importantly they failed to reach the knock out stage of Champions League this season. It is pretty much understandable that Liverpool is not the team they were last season since they lost a number of key players like Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa in Summer transfer window. Moreover, captain Steven Gerrard and key striker Fernando Torres missed a significant part of the season through injury.

Reports have it in the media that Liverpool has reached very close to sign Atletico Madrid’s Argentine midfielder Maxi Rodriguez. Jose Segui, the agent of the player, has said that the two clubs are still negotiating for the transfer fee and confirmed that it would be a permanent deal. Rodriguez recently lost his place in the starting line up of Atletico and his current contract with the Spanish club would expire at the end of the current season. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena is now all set to lave the Merseyside club to join Italian side Napoli for four and half years for a reported fee of £4 million, but the deal would be officially completed upon his arrival to Napoli. Since joining Liverpool in 2007, Dossena failed to cement his place in the stating line up.



Liverpool has rejected Birmingham City’s £9m bid for Dutch striker Ryan Babel who is reportedly keen to leave the club looking for more first team football ahead of this year’s world cup. However, Birmingham’s offer did not match with Liverpool’s valuation of the player at £12m, the amount they spent on the player in 2007.



Former England international Emile Heskey has also been linked with a move to Liverpool. The Aston Villa striker is reportedly keen to join Liverpool, but Villa manager Martin O'Neill wants to keep him at the Villa Park. Reports also have it in the media that Benitez is keen to buy Marouane Chamakh, the 25-year-old Morocco international currently playing for French champion Bordeaux. Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin seems to leave the English club in January and Dinamo Moscow is believed to be ready to pay £2 million to secure the service of the Ukraine international. Voronin joined Liverpool in 2007 on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, but spent most of his Liverpool stint out on loan to Hertha Berlin.
