Sri Lanka may Tour Pakistan in 2009

(This entry was originally published on Sunday, January 4th, 2009)

After Indian government stated that Indian cricket team can not tour Pakistan in January 2009, Pakistan invited Sri Lanka and it seemed that Sri Lanka would come. However, there has been a change among Sri Lanka cricket officials after Sri Lankan cricket board president Arjuna Ranatunga was dismissed by the country’s government. The new administration is not that much keen for the tour, but it has already been promised. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is trying its best to convince the Sri Lankan board for the tour. Now, it seems that the tour may indeed go out, but it may take into two phases.

NDTV reported:

They would then return for the one-day series against India and complete it by February 18 before coming back to play three Tests here.

“Obviously both the Pakistan and Sri Lankan boards want to make money out of their series and it is understandable the Lankans are keen to not lose the opportunity of playing against India,” a PCB source said.

The present scenario is a result of India cancelling a scheduled Test tour of Pakistan from January 4 to February 21 to play three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 game besides a side match.

Let us wait and see what happens next.
