Spanish golf legend, Severiano Ballesteros, underwent successful brain surgery

Spanish golf legend and former World No.1 professional golfer, Severiano Ballesteros, underwent his fourth brain surgery at La Paz Hospital in Madrid on December 2, 2008. Doctors drained fluid from his brain by implanting a valve. They also repaired a bone defect which originated from one of the surgeries he underwent earlier. Doctors infromed that his condition is now stable and he is recovering in ICU.

On October 5, 2008, 51 year old Ballesteros lost consciousness at Madrid’s International Airport. He was then admitted to hospital and underwent another surgery to remove a brain tumor. CNN.com reports:

“The patient Severiano Ballesteros underwent scheduled surgery for the placement of a cephalorachidian fluid VP shunt,” said the hospital in a statement.

“In the same intervention the medical team has done a cranioplastia to repair a bone defect. His situation is stable and he will remain in the Intensive Care Unit.”

In his illustrious golf career, Ballesteros won three British Opens and two Masters titles. He won 50 tournaments on the European Tour. Known to transform European golf, Ballesteros retired in 2007 for his back pain and started out as a golf course designer.
