New Zealand Cricketer Jesse Ryder Found Guilty of Drinking Again

(This entry was originally published Friday, January 9th, 2009)

New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder has been dropped from New Zealand team for the fourth ODI against West Indies on Saturday as he has been found guilty of getting drunk once again. Jesse Ryder breached discipline as he went out to drink following New Zealand’s big-margin victory in the third ODI. This is the second time Ryder has been in trouble for being alcoholic.

Nzherald reported:

Ryder, 24, broke team rules when he went out drinking after Wednesday’s win over the West Indies.

It is the second time he has been in trouble after drinking in the early hours while on New Zealand duty.

In Christchurch last February, Ryder, 24, shoved his left hand through a glass window in a bar about 5.30am, badly injuring his index finger.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan also came down hard on Ryder, saying that the batsman has to take the responsibility for what his mistakes. According to team rules, at least three more cricketers are allowed to go out together, but Ryder left the hotel with some of his friend on Wednesday night. He also missed a team meeting and a training session on Tuesday. Jesse Ryder admitted that he failed to control his drinking.

New Zealand cricketers stand besides him and expect that the batsman will be available for the fifth match of the series. Mathew Sinclair replaced Ryder in the first squad for the fourth ODI.
