(This entry was originally published on Thursday, January 8th, 2009)

Global credit crunch has already started hitting English football and there are lots of evidences out there. Chelsea’s proposed new contract for German midfielder Michael Ballack. Reports available in the media suggest that Chelsea is going to hand a contract extension for the star player whose current contract with Chelsea expires at the end of this season. Initially it was thought that Chelsea would not extend the contract for the injury-pronged midfielder. However, Chelsea now wants to keep the midfielder at Stamford Bridge, but the new contract, which is yet to done, seems pretty much strange for a club like Chelsea.

Under the proposed new deal, Ballack would receive his wage based on his performance which is totally different from his current deal in which he is receiving £121,000 per week from the club regardless of his performance. In the new proposed contract, Ballack’s basic wage structure will be lower than the current structure, but there will bonuses based on his performance.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reluctant to invest more in the club amidst global credit crunch. Chelsea has a number of players with very high wage structures and the club is finding it difficult to cope up with it. That is why, Chelsea is interested to change its pay structure and Michael Ballack seems to be first player to go under such deal at Chelsea. However, if the contract for Ballack comes into existence then the players like John Terry, Frank Lampard may need to for their own.
