Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard to Play against Preston in FA Cup

(This entry was originally published on Friday, January 2nd, 2009)

Liverpool is going to visit Preston on Saturday (3 January) in the third round FA Cup match. Ahead of the match, Liverpool fans can feel happy to know that captain Steven Gerrard will be part of Liverpool squad for the upcoming encounter following his recent arrest by Merseyside police on his alleged involvement in a clash at a bar. Gerrard along with two other men have been accused of involving in the incident. You might think that the incident might affect Gerrard’s performance. Well, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez does not think so.

BBC reported:

“In terms of football, everything has been normal for Steven. He has received the support of everyone - the players, myself, the club - and he has trained well and is focused on football.

“I do not believe he will be distracted. He wants to play football and concentrate just on that. He will be thinking about playing well, scoring goals and making sure the club progresses to the next round.

“He will play, and I have confidence he will be ready.”

Liverpool has started the New Year at the top of premier league table with 45 points from 20 matches and is looking to win their first premier league title in 19 years. In fact, after a number of years, Liverpool has remained in the title contention midway through the season. Liverpool won the FA Cup last time in 2006, but failed to defend the title last season and will be looking to retain the title this season. Liverpool has been in excellent form so far this season and I think, they have a good chance to clinch the FA Cup title too. Liverpool can seek the service of their Spanish striker Fernando Torres who got over from hamstring injury and is ready to come back in action with Preston match.
