Famous Australian golfer, Geoff Ogilvy, won the Mercedes-Benz Championship the opening tournament of the 2009 PGA tour season. Oglivy had a six stroke difference with the second position holder Anthony Kim.

In the final round, Oglivy scored five under par and his total was 268. Throughout the final round he played steadily except for scoring a bogey on the 8th hole. The thirty one year old golfer played an excellent 3-iron shot from 223 yards and landed the ball within 20 feet of the ninth hole. He scored an eagle on the 9th hole and that was the turning point of his game. On the back nine he scored birdies on six holes. Oglivy was very happy with his win. He said:

“It’s an uncomfortable feeling to know you’re six shots out in front and you’re almost back to tied,……You can just imagine what people are thinking. It’s not a very nice feeling.”

This was Oglivy’s fifth PGA Tour win. In 2006, Geoff Oglivy won the U.S. Open. By winning the 5.6 million dollar PGA Mercedes-Benz Championship, Oglivy improved his earnings and world ranking. He earned$1.12 million and ranked 6 on the world ranking.

Anthony Kim, the second position holder scored one birdie on his back nine. Kim scored 67 and tied for the second position with Davis Love III.
