(This entry was originally published on Sunday, January 11th, 2009)

In the final round of the Joburg Open 2009 Championship, Danish golfer, Anders Hansen had the last laugh. The thirty eight year old golfer won the €1.1million Championship. In the final round, Hansen scored 5 under par. His total score was 269. South African player, Andrew McLardy won the second place scoring 270. In the final round, McLardy scored 3-under par. The championship started from January 8, 2009, at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, one of the most difficult golf courses in South Africa. David Drysdale finished in the third position scoring 271.

Hansen’s beginning was not very impressive. In the first round, he scored par followed by 3-under par and 7-under par in the second and third round. British golfer, Michael Hoey was doing fine till third round. In Round 3, he was in third position with a score of 204. In the final round, he had a great start but scored a double-boggey on the par-5 eight hole.

This match is memorable for me because, for the first time, I saw a player scoring an albatross which is considered to be a rare event in golf. He is Retief Goosen, the two time US Open Champion. Unfortunately, Goosen did not do very well. He had nine bogeys but scored an albatross on the par-5 18th hole. Goosen tied for 23rd position by scoring 277.
