Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test 2009: What Should Bangladesh Do Now?

(This entry was originally published on Sunday, January 4th, 2009)

At the end of the second day, Bangladesh is now on the verge of another defeat in the series. Bangladeshi batsmen got all out for 208 in the first innings. The only half century came from bowling all rounder Mashrafe Mortaza who scored 63 runs. Thus, Sri Lanka got a 176-run lead in the first innings. Sri Lanka reached 13 for 0 in their second innings at stumps. At this moment, Bangladesh is now under huge pressure because Sri Lanka holds 189-lead with 10 wickets intact in their second innings. From this situation, it will be a challenging task for Bangladesh to take the match to the fifth day. So, Bangladeshi batsmen have to play very well in the second innings, but before that Bangladeshi bowlers have to bowl very well and restrict Sri Lanka within a small total in their second innings. Tomorrow, Bangladeshi bowlers will have to try to pick up some early wickets so that Sri Lankan batsmen can not go after Bangladeshi spinners later on. Today, Mashrafe Mortaza bowled pretty well, but could not pick up any wicket. However, tomorrow Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain and two spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Enamul Haque jnr have to be economical as well as pick up wickets to restrict the visiting side within a small total.
