Stanley Cup 2009 4th Final: Pittsburgh Penguins vs Detroit Red Wings

After winning the third final on Wed Tuesday, Pittsburgh Penguins indicated to bounce back in the Stanley Cup 2009. Still, Detroit Red Wings leads 2-1 in the best of seven final which started on May 30. Detroit won the first two games 3-1 on both occasions, before Pittsburgh made a strong return in the series with a 4-2 victory in the third match.

Now, the two teams are going to face each other tomorrow (4 June 2009) at the Mellon Arena in the fourth final. Another victory for Detroit would see them very close to another Stanly Cup title. For Pittsburgh, it is a very crucial match to keep their title hope intact as they are already 2-1 down in the seven-match series. If Pittsburgh can win tomorrow, it would be 2-2 in the series with 3 games left.

Pittsburgh made a good come back in the third final before the home fans, but they know the work has not finished yet. There are four games still to go in the series in which they have to win three games to become Stanley Cup 2009 champion. Pittsburgh fans will expect another excellent performance from Sergei Gonchar who was instrumental behind their win in the previous game, scoring the third goal for Pittsburgh. Gonchar’s performance might inspire other Pittsburgh players to deliver their best against Detroit tomorrow.

Detroit wingers Justin Abdelkader and Johan Franzen have scored two goals each so far in Stanley Cup 2009 finals and they have a big role to play for the defending champions tomorrow. Detroit lost the third game in the third period. So, they need to become much more consistent through a game, if they really want to defend their title.

Last year, Detroit Red Wings defeated the same opponent Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 in the Stanley Cup finals. Interestingly, Detroit won the first two games, followed by a Pittsburgh victory in the third. Then in the fourth game Detroit won and extended their lead to 3-2. Now, let us see if Detroit can replicate their success of last season or Pittsburgh can take a sweet revenge over Detroit.
