Tennis world is going to see the second ever all-Russian final at French Open on Saturday (6 June 2009) when Dinara Safina will face fellow countrywomen Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros. So, it has been pretty much clear that the women’s singles title of French Open 2009 would go to Russia; no matter who wins in the final. Both the Russians ensued their second final spots winning their respective semi final games today.

No doubt, Russian tennis fans are now very much excited to see another all-Russian finals, five years after Anastasia Myskina defeating fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in French Open final to become the first Russian to win a grand slam title. The interesting fact is that both Safina and Kuznetsova got two lesser known opponents in the semi final who were playing their first ever grand slam semi final today. Naturally, Safina and Kuznetsova were the favorites to reach the final.
However, Kuznetsova faced strong challenge from 30th seed Samantha Stosur, who defeated Dementieva in the third round. The three-set affair saw Kuznetsova winning over her Australian opponent 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the final. The score line would clearly suggest the kind of challenge Stosur posed against m Kuznetsova. The Russian won the first set 6-4, but Stosur excellently bounced back in the second set to take it 7-6 in tie breaker, coming back from 5-2 down. However, Kuznetsova clinched the match by taking the third set 6-3.
In the contrary, Dinara Safina did not face any strong challenge from 20th seed Dominika Cibulkova as she clinched the game 6-3, 6-3 on straight set. Well, I do not think that world no. 1 Safina is going to have as easy a match in the final as she had in the semi final.
Both Safina and Kuznetsova will play their second ever French Open final this year. Safina lost to Ana Ivanovic in French Open 2008 final, while Kuznetsova was defeated by Justine Henin in 2006 final at French Open. Another similarities between the two Russians is that both the players failed to achieve as much success as they were supposed, given their talent and skill. Here, I am sharing some other similarities between the two from Telegraph:
Naturally, both Russians now live, not in their home country, but in Monte Carlo, the tax haven on the French Riviera. So, after Kuznetsova's defeat of Australian Sam Stosur, what we now know is that a Russian-born, Monte Carlo-based tennis player is going to win the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen for the first time at the weekend.
World no. 1 Dinara Safina has not won any grand slam title yet in her career, despite her two grand slam final appearances including this year’s Australian Open 2009. Naturally, she will not let the go away this time around. Kuznetsova might have won one grand slam title in her career, but the 7th seed has won the US Open title back in 2004, and during these 5 years, she could only reach the French Open final in 2006, the only grand slam success for the 23-year-old. So, Kuznetsova will not have any less temptation to win the French Open 2009 title than Dinara Safina. So, we can expect to see an exciting final in the women’s singles event of French Open 2009.
