Twenty20 World Cup 2009: Pakistan Squad

Pakistan selectors announced the 15-member Pakistan squad for ICC World Twenty20 2009 which is all set to go underway on 5 June in England. Led by captain Younis Khan, the team includes two uncapped players: Mohammad Aamer and Shahzaib Hasan. 17-year-old Aamer is a promising left-arm pacer who excelled in the recent domestic season, while Shahzaib Hasan, a 19-year-old opener from Karachi, has already shown his talent and skill for Karachi in domestic league.

Pakistan batting line up includes proven performers like Salman Butt, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, who was the star of twenty20 world cup 2007, big hitter Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Fawad Alam and young Ahmed Shehzad, who debuted during the recent ODI series between Pakistan and Australia in UAE. Pakistan’s pace attack will be led by Umar Gul who is the most successful bowler in twenty20 international with highest number of wickets. Moreover, there are talented pacers like Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat, Iftikhar Anjum, who replaced injured Shoaib Akhtar, and young Mohammad Aamer.

Pakistan has a strong spin attack too in the presence of Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Shoaib Malik, and occasion spinner Fawad Alam. Though off spinner Ajmal has shown excellent performance in UAE against Australia, he was reported for suspect bowling action. No doubt, Pakistan cricket fans are expecting that Ajmal will have no problem to take part in twenty20 world cup. The strength of Pakistan squad has been increased thanks to the presence of a number of all rounders like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and Sohail Tanvir. Pakistan failed to win the title of the first twenty20 world cup as they lost to India in the final, but considering the squad strength, I think, Pakistan has everything to make another shot to win twenty20 world cup.
