Harbhajan Singh on his Role in IPL Mumbai Indians Team

India’s ace spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that he does not know about his role in Mumbai Indians team, one of the 8 franchises of IPL. Mumbai Indians is not doing well in the tournament lately, despite a good start to the IPL 2009 tournament. With 9 points from 10 games, Mumbai Indians are now in the 6th place in the point table and they are now on the verge of getting out of the semi final race.

Harbhajan Singh thinks the reason behind Mumbai’s poor run is their struggling batting form. He has said that if there are not enough runs on the board, then bowlers can not defend it in the twenty20 competition. The off spinner is also unhappy with the way he has been used by the team. In a number of matches, Harbhajan Singh was given only 2 of his 4 allotted overs and it surprised many cricket analysts as well as fans. He is the prime spinner of the squad and it is just unacceptable when you use your main spinner only for 2 overs, when there are not many runs on the board to defend.

Moreover, Harbhajan Singh has been used mainly in the powerplays with most of the fielders are in the 30-yard circle. Well, a good bowler must have the ability to bowl at any situation and Harbhajan Singh has that ability too, but I am surprised because Mumbai captain Sachin Tendulkar has hardly used Harbhajan Singh when there was no fielding restriction. Harbhajan Singh should be used to create pressure on the opponent team so that other bowlers can capitalize on that and pick up wickets. Using Harbhajan only in the powerplays is not the right decision. The spinner has, however, not given up his hopes of reaching the semi final of IPL 2009 yet, but has confirmed that Mumbai must win all of their remaining matches to qualify for the last four.
